| War Party (1989) Cast: Billy Wirth, Kevin Dillon, M.Emmet Walsh When a historical reenactment of the Calvary/Indian war turns tragic, due to a confrontation earlier set off by a bar fight, three native american teens set out to Canada and escape the redneck pursuers who come to scalp them in this ugly and mean spirited film which is all the more offensive due to it's pretentions to be taken seriously as a "message movie" ! Few films earn a "No Stars" rating on my site, in order to do so one must be incredibly inept, morally repulsive and of course deadly dull. War Party is an offensive movie. It may not be the worst movie ever made, but it's definitely one of the most depressing. This is a movie that seems to imply that white people and indians hate each other, no questions asked. The message seems to be that the only way to solve this racial hatred is to basically kill anyone different from you. Indeed every major character harbors racial hatred and therefore making it hard to identify with any point of view, especially the film's. The movie is so overblown and over the top with it's violence that one gets the idea that it's done not to advance the story but rather to provide stock reasons to root our bloodthirty "heroes" on. War Party depicts and celebrates the darkest side of human nature, because it tries to disguise itself as a message movie, it makes it all the more despicable. So when our heroes go down swinging at the National Guard, you feel a sense of relief, that the movie has finally been put out of it's misery. I myself felt extremely saddened by the whole affair, realizing that a movie marketing so much hate could actually be made. D.Franc Roddam NO STARS |
