| Malone (1987) Cast:Burt Reynolds, Cliff Robertson, Lauren Hutton, Scott Wilson, Cynthia Gibb Reynolds stars as a retired CIA agent who protects a woman's farm from sadistic millionaire Cliff Robertson, see he runs the town and he wants to knock the family back in line in this well made but mostly dull actioner which is surprisingly low on action. Malone is one of Reynolds' better movies of the 80's, there are a few actionscenes which do relieve the tedium at times, the problem is that it's just not nearly enough. Another problem is that the script never develops any of the characters in the script so there's no reason to care one way or another what happens. I think that's the problem with Malone, it's never exciting enough to hold our attention past the action, it just keeps lingering on melodrama that never works due to the script's ineptitude. Although there are some good performances and any movie with a cast like this does have it moments but sadly it's just not as fun as one would hope. Another problem is that it's taken way too seriously, as if the director is shooting a powerhouse drama that he hopes to win an Oscar with, this grinds down the movie and infact makes it quite dopey at times as well. There's just no getting around the bottomline, in that Malone is a highly disappointing affair which entertains only in spurts. D.Harley Cokeliss** |
