| The Last Patrol (2001) Cast:Dolph Lundgren,Sherri Alexander.Joe Michael Burke,Juliano Mer,Rebecca Cross Lundgren stars as a soldier who is stranded on a base when a 9.5 earthquake destroys California and then must apprehend a group of prisioners led by a power hungry dictator like prisioner who is planning on killing them the "Old fashioned way" in this generally mediocre actioner which is at least an improvement over most of Lundgren's later action flicks. . The problem with The Last Patrol is that Dolph Lundgren isn't used very well, In that this film has hardly any action at all. Certainly if the movie had been made as a serious movie with a well written story this could've gotten away with the lack of action but unfortunately it's a silly Mad Max style actioner which needs lots of action to really succeed. In fact the movie can be described (Which most likely it has) as The Road Warrior meets Giligan's Island with how tounge in cheek everything is played. There are times when The Last Patrol actually works, whenever Lundgren and his cast debate about whether the world exists outside their camp or not, but the movie abandons this promising concept of the plot in favor of goofy antics which slows the film down. Also disappointing is the lack of villain threat through out the film. Don't get me wrong, Juliano Mer is certainly menacing enough for the role but his part in underwritten and given little screen time. Things get even sillier when Dolph Lundgren's past revolves around a new age woman who isn't only underwritten but honestly doesn't make sense to the movie. Plus the whole kid angle is meant to give Lundgren humanity but we feel him more human around his troops rather than seeing his soft side. Also the movie needed to be more Mad Max and less sitcomish. It's easy to see why The Last Patrol doesn't work, it has just way too much baggage to juggle but I give it extra points for this, least it doesn't work for trying to hard, rather than too little. .D.Sheldon Lettich** |
