| The Killer (1989) Cast:Chow Yun Fat,Danny Lee,Sally Yeh An assassin finds himself hunted by his former employers and gets help from a cop and a blind woman who is also his love interest.John Woo directed this exciting epic that for the most part is popular and considered the best HK movie ever made, although this author disagrees. It's certainly a great acheivement and it's action sequences are downright fantastic but for some reason Woo's other movies just have more bite to it. CYF and John Woo have always done great movies together but this in my opinion doesn't match their other two excellent heroic bloodshed movies,The Killer while immensely exciting doesn't have the edgy grittiness or the humanistic feeling of heroic bloodshed magic that A Better Tomorrow and Hard Boiled have. I recommend because it is vastly superior to almost everything down in the US and that the story works as an effective drama and is a very exciting actioner. Also it's one of those few movies where the action is actually beautifully choreographed and touches of symbolism and humor add even more excellence to a very good movie. This is one of those movies where one is shocked at how so much can be accomplished with so little and yet this remains one of Woo's best movies. However as noted it's not Woo's best. Hard Boiled and A Better Tomorrow remain more powerful and exciting..D.John Woo***1/2 |
