| Hong Kong 97 (1995) Cast:Robert Patrick,Brion James,Ming-Na Wen,Tim Thomerson,Andrew Divoff Hong Kong 97 stars Patrick as an assassin who is hunted by either triads or his own company who put out the contract. Predictable action movie in the vein of John Woo which lacks the style and rewarding script, Although far from Pyun's worst movie (His movies range from bad to well, really bad) Hong Kong 97 doesn't have much going for it. .HK 97 has a few good actionscenes but the feeling is been there done that and despite the talented cast the movie fails to overcome it's predictability. I think it's true that out of all the B.movie critics out there, I am one of the more open minded towards Pyun. Oh I still think he's not a very good director but I am willing to give his movies the benefit of the doubt, which is why I enjoyed Kickboxer 4 and Nemesis. However with Hong Kong 97, Pyun wastes a very talented and more than competent cast with his overuse of cliches and lack of story telling. Movies like this are hard to review since the movie leaves such little impression it's hard to write criticism on what you see. In the end what we end up with is your standard espionage thriller that far from being the worst out there is still not much to hold your breath over. D.Albert Pyun** |
