Highlander III:The Sorcerer (1994)

Cast:Christopher Lambert,Mario Van Peebles,Deborah Unger, Mako

Another lame follow up to this tired series this time has Immortals Lambert and Van Peebles going up against each other to see who can cut off other's head of first. Once again tedium reigns over this worn out franchise.

Highlander III jumps from one pointless subplot to another making the film hard to follow. It makes sense this time at least, but unfortunately the movie lacks any of the style of the first and even the bizarre surreality of # 2. This one just feels like a by the numbers remake lacking the flavor of the first. Of course the novel touch here is that Van Peebles is a sorcerer who is a master of illusion, like Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat which also has Lambert in it.  Naturally this provides fodder for lame special effects as well as badly staged swordfights. All of it coming off as boring.

Infact strangely the theatrical release was PG-13 and then was released on video rated R, of course watching  the R rated version on video (I saw
Highlander II in theaters, enough said) one doesn't know if it was any worse, not that it matters, Highlander III is generally like it's predecessor; Considered a low point in the career of Lambert. Although  people consider this an improvement over Highlander II:The Quickening. However at at least that one seemed to be trying and was on a technical stand point, well made.  Highlander III on the other hand is poorly made with cheap effects and is edited so poorly it's impossible to discern present day action from the past.   So in the end it's hard to really acknowledge which one is worse, although I'm leaning towards this one. Who knew how right Lambert was when he said "There can be only one!"   D.Andrew Morahan*
