Drunken Master (1978)

Cast:Jackie Chan,Simon Yuen

When Chan runs afoul of local mobsters he is beaten badly and he returns to his uncle who will teach him drunken fighting. An epic of biblical standards, this masterpiece is a great introduction to Chan's early work. It also represents his best work until 1985's Police Story. Indeed it was only outdone by Police Story and it's even better sequel.

The whole formula of training montages involving a master and pupil are indeed one of favorite genres. Although I can't say i've never met such a movie that I didn't like, this is a genre I count myself as a fan of. Drunken Master however remains one of the best in the genre. Indeed this establishes Chan's signature style of humor and spectactular fightscenes. It holds up quite well and although it was made in the 70's it remains vastly superior ALL of Chan's American movies. Also the relationship between Chan and Yuen (The master who trains Chan) is hilarious and provides lots of chuckles. Really for an old school martial arts actioner one can't do much better than this. .Yuen Woo-ping
