Detention (2003)

Cast:Dolph Lundgren,Alex Karzis,Larry Day,Kata Dobo,Mif

Dolph Lundgren stars as Sam Decker a teacher who is forced into action when a group of drug runners take over the schools and start shooting people on contact in this ridiculous yet competent actioner which is a mixed bag of good and very bad moments.

The first thing I was wondering half of the time was what the bad guy wanted to accomplish by taking over a school. I also didn't understand why they would be surprised to see students still at the school an hour after school let out, what, didn't they stop to think that perhaps detention runs after as well as sporting events? Honestly as brain-dead as the plot is, it's made worse by Karzis' god-awful performance. Half of the time the guy comes off like Eminem's slightly imposing twin brother.

The only thing that holds this thing together is Dolph Lundgren who comes off much better then is needed in a cheap throwaway such as this, as an athlete he still has some good moves and he's kept himself in shape (unlike Steven "Nutty Professor" Seagal)  plus the actionscenes are plentiful but only competent when they should be thrilling.
Detention is pure formula action,  as generic as it's box would indicate but if one likes Dolph Lundgren one should be mildly diverted by what's delivered here. It's simply a routine genre offering, not bad enough to hate  and sure as hell not good enough to really enjoy.. D.Sidney J. Furie **
