| Demolition Man (1993) Cast:Sylverster Stallone,Wesley Snipes,Sandra Bullock,Nigel Hawthrone,Rob Schieder,Denis Leary In 1996 a cop nicknamed "Demolition Man" (Stallone)is thawed out to help the futuristic police do battle with a mean spirited serial killer/terrorist named Simon Phoenix(Snipes) who basically is out of the futuristic cop's league. However Phoenix has been thawed out to kill an underground rebel and the two clash for an ultimate battle in this fun Stallone vehicle which gets it's mileage from Stallone's fish out of water in the refined society where profanity has been banned. Demolition Man is probably the second best movie made under Stallone's belt in the early 90's. Of course that doesn't say a whole lot, however Demolition Man spins it's anal retentive future with a glance of humor and for once it shows the world not as a burned out wasteland but rather as a suburbanized livelyhood which of course seems more totalitatrian than the Mad Max. Although a lot of it's humorous edge was done far better in Robocop, Demolition Man does manage to put some creative spins on it's plot source and Stallone is pretty good at playing a down to earth one-man-army who doesn't understand the wealthy people who've outlawed meat, salt, beer and sex. Indeed this is a revisionist's extreme take on conservative values, which resembles the mentality of the Reagan days. Of course this will not provoke deep conversation about society (At least I hope not) but it makes the action more interesting and I for one was entertained through out. Although Denis Leary is somewhat wasted. D.Marco Brambilla *** |
