| The Chinese Connection III (1979) Cast: Bruce Li, Ping Ao Wei Boy this was a surprise. After disliking both Chinese Connection and Chinese Connection II, I found myself strangely enjoying this chapter and i'll explain myself. Bruce Li returns home to help his mother and younger brother out but the Japanese conspire to wipe Bruce Li out, however because the Japanese can't go around beating the crap out of people in public, they conspire to turn Bruce Li and his ex-bestfriend against each other. I'm not sure why I liked this movie but I did. It's most likely possible because this movie has just right amount of story and fight sequences to balance out and build momentum in both sequences. Also the climax complete with the lightning strikes and raining inside (Most likely taken from the excellent Street Fighter with Sonny Chiba) adds a stylish touch and despite the dubbing and stuff, one can tell this was meant as a character driven movie, in fact it bares so little resemblence to the first two that frankly I found myself getting into it a lot more. That being said the movie has many loose ends not tied up right (For instance the framing of Bruce Li, the killing of Japanese ambassadors and the love triangle.) but that being said I was impressed by the attempt to make the usual martial arts mean something because of the characters. It's the best of the series and I think Bruce Lee fans will like this a lot. D.Tso Nam Lee*** |
