Istanbul is the only city in the world that stretches on to two continents. The main part of the city stands on the south-eastern tip of Europe, and is separated from its suburbs in Asia by the Bosphorus. The Golden Horn then divides the European section of the city into two parts: Ancient Stambul to the south, and Galata and Beyoglu (the old Pera) to the north. Finally the old Skutari (now Üsküdar), is located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. This fascinating city stretching along the shores of the Marmara Sea, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, has been the seat of two empires and the centre of art and science for several hundred years. |
