Team TYRRELL

Champions in 1971 and 1973

Ken Tyrrell stunned the F1 world when he unveiled his own car, the Tyrrell 001 on August 17th 1970. Ken had sucess running the Equipe Maltra International Formula One Team since 1968 but wanted to have a team with his name on it and so was born Team Tyrrell. Tyrrell have always been run on a shoestring budget and often have not had any major sponsorship on there cars at all. Tyrrell were most sucessful in the early years with Jackie Stewart Winning two World Titles for the Team. Tyrrell competed in 430 races for 23 wins. Ken Tyrrell has often given one off drives to unknown drivers who have sponsorship or in cases like Mike Thackwell because he belived they had a talent to drive in F1, this is the major reason why there have been 47 drivers in 28 seasons. In 1998 Ken Tyrrell sold his Team to Craig Pollack who turned Tyrrell into Team BAR.

The P34 Six Wheeler

In 1975 Tyrrell engineer Derek Gardner came up with a novel design concept for the team. The idea behind the six wheeler was to reduce lift and drag at the front of the car. His reasoning was that a small tyre at the front could be protected by a full with wing and thus create much less drag and lift than a normal size tyre. However a smaller tyre meant less grip so to achieve the grip of a large front tyre you needed to have two small tyres. This was an amazing design which when sorted out early in 1976 resulted in some very consistant top finishes (16 points finishes out of 25 entries in 1976) including a Win at the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix and 7 2nd places thus inabling Tyrrell to finish Thrid in the Constructors Championship. The car did however have two major problems which it could not overcome and was only raced in the 1976-77 seasons. The first problem was the weight of the car with double the componants on the front of the car there was a significant weight dissadvantage. The second and perhaps the biggest problem was that Goodyear could not justify spending money to develop the special 10 inch tyres needed for the P34.
