The Years from 1979-1985.
Carlo chiti was the man behind Alfa Romeo's return to Formula One as a full works Team. Although Alfa's flat 12 engine had been seen in previous years in the Martini Brabham Team the engine was the nering the end of its life span so while working on a new V12 unit it was decided to return to racing as complete team so in 1979 at the Belgium Grand Prix Bruno Giacomelli showed up in a tubby Tipo177 chassis. The early Alfas were somewhat overwieght and had bad handling problems but performed well enough without winning. By 1981 the engine had changed to a new Turbo Charged V8 but the car was still not a winning one. 1983 proved to be Alfa's most sucessful with two second place finishes and 6th in the Constructors Seriesbut alas this was the best Alfa could do and by mid-season in 1985 Alfa Romeo had decided to pull the plug on there F1 involvement.
