There are likely to be some errors in name spelling due to inability to decipher the handwriting. I have made corrections wherever verification was available. If in doubt, refer to the microfilm. Sex/Race: Male and female are easily discernable by the letters m and f. Race however is noted as; w=white, b=black, and m=mulatto. In cases where it is confusing to determine the sex based on the name, I have followed the age with an m or f.Occupation of household head is Farmer unless otherwise noted. At this point in time, almost everyone farmed even though they might have held a job outside the home place. RE value is the total value of the land and personal property owned by the citizen. Even though it may not be listed, we can't assume they had nothing, it could be that the person giving the information just didn't know. I include these stated values only to give some idea as to the economic status of citizens at that point in time. Note that values were quite different at that time since inflation has exceeded 1000% over the years. A man who was worth $50 in 1870 was in very good shape. Birthplaces are abbreviated and are all in Virginia unless otherwise noted. Female person listed second in household is usually assumed to be the wife of the head of family, however, they may in fact be the daughter, and there may be more than one family listed in a household, sometimes it isn't clear as to just who these people are or what relation they are to the head of the household. Unlike previous reports which listed Northern and Southern Sections, the report is divided into three sections, which are the Dan River, Mayo River, and Smith River districts.
