Original Introduction from the First Issue

Welcome to the Newsletter for the 2300 AD Enthusiast

As editor of this newsletter, it is my privilege to welcome you to the 2300 Resource; The first official publication devoted solely to the far-reaching universe of 2300 AD.  For those of you who are not familiar with it, 2300 AD is Game Designers' Workshop's science fiction role-playing game set in the 24th century.  The game was developed with the intent of providing players with a realistic and consistent environment that is as interesting and enjoyable to learn about as it is to game in.

The game has been around since 1986 when it appeared in its first edition as Traveller: 2300.  Two years later, under the capable guidance of Lester Smith, the game was transformed into the 2300 AD game that we have today.  But even now, roughly five years after its original appearance, there is still so much about this background universe that many of us would like to know.  Because it is an extension of our 20th century world, there are many aspects that really should be covered.

The good part is that there are so many modern references to draw from about cultures, languages, traditions, science, history politics, religion... the list goes on indefinitely.  That in itself is the bad part; There is so much to our modern world that realistically projecting it into the future is a very difficult task, more so than for just about any other game because of 2300 AD's international scope, GDW has done a wonderful job in the development of 2300 AD, but there is still so much more to do.  It is for this reason that we bring you the 2300 Resource - an attempt to fill in some part of the gaps in our collective knowledge of the game's universe.

About the HTML 2300 Resource Archive

2300 Resource was a short-lived OFFICIAL newsletter for the 2300 AD game.  Its creation was possible due to the efforts of long-time 2300 AD fan, Clare W. Hess.  Clare gave me the opportunity to assist him on this project but it really was his baby.

The 2300 Resource web page is my attempt to bring back at least the spirit of his newsletter and the archive is being presented here to give those who missed it in its print form to get a look at the materials that were presented in it.  Keep in mind that all materials in these newsletters are OFFICIAL.  They were all pre-screened by GDW and approved as official material for the game.  All original articles are included but some other materials ( like subscription information and like items) have been edited out.

I hope that you find this information both enjoyable and a valuable resource for your games.

Clearing up the "What is official" confusion

All the pages from Jay's website, that I now archive, use this blue background.

Only the ones with the "2300 Resource" logo centered at the top and the phrase "In 1990, GDW approved this article as official material for 2300AD." are official, since just those ones appeared in Clare and Jay's 2300 Resource fanzine.  They are the ones linked to by the menu below.

The other articles from Jay's site, found elsewhere on my site, were unofficial fan creations that were not reviewed by GDW.
