Wladimir Klitschko was born on March 25, 1976 in Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan).

His father, Wladimir Rodionovich, was colonel of Air Force. His mother, Nadezhda Ulyanovna, was attendant.

Together with parents, Wladimir and his brother Vitali have traveled all over the former USSR. In 1985 they moved to Ukraine.

Childhood playful fights and wrestling gradually developed into serious hobbies of kickboxing for Vitali and boxing for Wladimir. The brothers started boxing in their early teens, Vitali at 13, Wladimir at 14.

"A trainer came to the school and asked who would like to box," Vitali said. "Everybody wanted to and everybody tried, and everybody went to train. A month later a few were left, and a year later only a couple people were left. At that point, I had the feeling that I could make something of myself as a boxer. Then, I really started to train.''

Offered Wladimir: "There were various reasons to box, like boredom, the chance to give me the opportunity to travel, but also because my brother was boxing.''

In rather short time, Vitali achieved significant successes - becoming sixfold world kickboxing champion (two times as armature and four times as professional), three-time Ukrainian heavyweight champion in boxing, champion of the 1st World Military Games (Italy, 1995), and silver medallist in the World Boxing Championship.
Wladimir this whole time kept up with the older brother. Already at the age of seventeen he became the champion of Europe among juniors, a five time boxing champion of Ukraine, Champion of the 1st World Military Games (-91kg), and the silver medallist of European Championship. His greatest achievement during amateur career - a gold medal and the rank of boxing champion in a super heavyweight division during the Olympic games of 1996 in Atlanta.

For his victory, Wladimir has awarded medal "for courage" by the Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma.
Vitali and Wladimir have a strong brotherly bond, yet there is a constant competition between them, which motivates them for more victories and bigger achievements. Probably that's the reason for their success.

He began his professional boxing career in November 16, 1996.
