Roy Jones Jr. gave a hint that he was embarking on a legendary fistic career in 1979, when, at the age of 10, he administered a sound beating to a 14-year-old who outweighed him by 16 pounds. It was Jones' first amateur fight; he weighed just 69 pounds. Before he was done fighting for cups and silver baubles, he would win 121 of 134 bouts.
Jones had a very successful
career as an amateur boxer - he won the 1984 United States National Junior
Olympics in the 119 lb. weight division, he won the 1986 United States National
Golden Gloves in the 139 lb. weight division and he won the 1987 United States
National Golden Gloves in the 156 lb. weight division.
"Roy lost to Frank Liles at the 1988 U.S. Championships, an Olympic qualifier.
He lost in the semifinals at the 1988 Golden Gloves, another qualifier, to
Gerald McClellan. He qualified for the Olympic Trials by being picked as a
member of the "select team" by the USA Boxing president, the chairman of the
International Selection Committe and the 1988 Olympic boxing team manager. The
"select team" was made up of boxers filling in vacant spots due to duplications
(one boxer qualified in more than one tournament). Roy won the Olympic Trials by
beating Frank Liles on a 3/2 decision. Frank was then picked as "the most
noteworthy opponent" in the 156 weight class to compete against Jones in the
Box-Offs. Jones beat Liles again, on a 3/2 decision, to earn a spot on the 1988
Olympic team."
Jones represented the United States at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. His participation there proved to be controversial since, just as in Michael Carbajal's case, he lost a highly disputed decision in the final. Jones lost to a South Korean fighter, and a subsequent investigation led some of the judges to admit that they had accepted bribes from Korean officials to vote against Jones. Being robbed of gold led Olympic organizers to establish a new scoring system for Olympic boxing.
It should be mentioned that, after the 2002 Winter Olympics scandal where the Olympic committee decided to award gold medals to both Russia's and Canada's figure skating teams after finding that the French judge had been bribed, Jones had hoped that the committee would re-open his case and award him a gold medal. However, no such action was taken by the Olympic committee.
