Gene apparently enlisted in the army soon after graduation, and is now a Sgt. 1st Class at Ft. Gordon, Georgia. He had been selected as the post's nominee for the Outstanding Military Citizen of Georgia in recognition of outstanding community service.
Gene and his wife Carol have three children.
