Chapter 1, Part 1

It was a bright and sunny morning. Stripes was leaning on his arm, looking out of the window at Mobius’s Great Forest, groggily longing to go out and take a nap at his special tree in the middle of an out-of-the-way clearing in the forest. The young tiger was so absorbed by this that he didn’t notice that the teacher was asking him a question.

“Mr. Tigre!”

Stripes started and barely stopped himself from jumping out of his seat. His hat flopped off of his head and onto the desk in front of him. It was a blue baseball cap with a red “S” embroidered on the front. He quickly snatched it back up and placed it back on his orange furry head, carefully fixing it between his rounded ears.

He finally glanced up to his teacher and blushed under his fur when he realized that the whole class was looking at him and that some were giggling. “Uh…,” he began. “Sorry, ma’am, but I wasn’t really paying attention,” quickly tumbled out of his mouth.

‘I can see that, Mr. Tigre,” she responded. “I’ll repeat myself once more. The question is, ‘What is the most used form of transportation throughout the world of Stellon, especially in the Mushroom Kingdom region?’”

“…Warp pipes of various colors. Green are the most common.” Stripes replied confidently after only about a half second of thought. His knowledge of other worlds, unbeknownst to his teacher, had little to do with monotonous textbooks or carpal tunnel-inducing notes and a lot to do with his favorite video games that featured those worlds as their settings.

“Very good,” responded the teacher, not the least bit surprised at the prompt answer. Stripes had proven himself to be a very good student, at least when he tried. Glancing at the clock, she continued, “Alright; we’re out of time for today.” The students started to noisily gather their books and papers, and the teacher had to raise her voice to be heard. “Remember: test tomorrow on the various worlds’ forms of transportation! Be sure to study! Class dismissed.”

The diverse group of students quickly crowded through the door. The average age among them was around fourteen or fifteen years. Stripes himself was fifteen. Despite sharing their age, the students all looked distinctly different from one another. Most were native Mobians, who in turn were made up of many different animaloid species, such as dogs, rabbits, hedgehogs, and squirrels. Other species could be seen scattered in the crowd. Here, a Funginade from the Mushroom Kingdom; there, a human. Humans could be found living on many of the known worlds, although they were rare on most, and made up a larger-than-average part of Mobius’s population.

Mobius was a relatively normal sized planet. It actually resided in the same star system as other inhabited planets, which is rare in any galaxy. Currently, the main part of the planet’s population was prospering. Only a few years before, the vile Dr. IvoEggmanRobotnik had been terrorizing the population by forcing them to be his robotic slaves. After he took the capital city of Mobotropolis and renamed it Robotropolis in his own likeness, he turned the whole city into a giant robot factory. Many small bands of determined Mobians fought back, however, and they eventually drove Eggman away and restored peace to the planet. After a while, the new government decided to rename the city to “Mobiathon” to signify a new era of prosperity.

This school and the surrounding neighborhood were near the edge of Mobiathon and right up against the Great Forest, a large mass of trees which was a popular place to go to for some peace and quiet for many Mobians. Stripes lived in a quaint house in this neighborhood with his mother, father, and younger sister. All four of them had strong family bonds and loved each other very much.

As Stripes waited to get out of the door of the school, he checked that his cap was still on straight and that his blue socks were still rolled down against his shoes. Lastly he made sure that the white laces on his green sneakers were properly tied.

Stripes, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, was a tiger of the bipedal animaloid variety that makes up the majority of Mobius’s population. His orange fur had black stripes scattered throughout, giving him his nickname. The tiger’s actual full name was Tophantos Tigre (Author’s Note: Anagram, anyone?), but, for obvious reasons, he preferred to go by “Stripes”.

Outside the school, Stripes met up with his best buddy, Hedgey. Hedgey was a brown hedgehog who was supposedly a cousin of the legendary freedom fighter, Sonic the Hedgehog. Hedgey himself closely resembled the “Blue Blur” except for his color and the fact that his spines were much smaller and more numerous than Sonic’s. Like Stripes, Hedgey sported a blue cap and sneakers. Unlike the tiger, the cap bore a letter “H” on the back and he wore it backwards. His socks were black to go with his white sneakers. The laces were also black and a black zigzag went down the sides of the shoes. Hedgey’s other distinguishing feature was that he was always wearing a t-shirt. The one he was wearing today had the words “I ♥ Princess Peach” printed on the front and a picture of the Mushroom Kingdom’s princess on the rear side.

“How was your day in our favorite place in the world?” Hedgey asked sarcastically.

“Oh, just stupendous!” Stripes replied in the same tone. “You?”

“Just maar-velous, my dear ol’ chap!” Hedgey declared, jokingly sporting a foreign accent.

They both chuckled as Hedgey’s humor started to relieve their stress from the school day.

Little did they know that what was to happen next would do anything but make them chuckle…

Chapter 1, Part 2

Arf arf!”

Louie Geetoo rolled over in bed, sleepily ignoring his pet’s barks. He was a Toon, a native of Toontown, a metropolis on the planet sometimes called Disnearth. Like on Mobius, the inhabitants of this animated region were mostly animaloids, though Toons resembling humans were common elsewhere on the planet. Louie himself was a lime green-feathered duck with an orange beak and orange, shoeless webbed feet and legs. He was tall (for a duck) and had a thin body. At the moment he was in his blue, feather-patterned pajamas and nightcap. His snores could be likened to the sound of a log being sawed in two.

“Whine. Woof!” the unusual pet standing next to the bed continued. Her name was Yummy, and she was Louie’s pet, a turquoise-furred Doodle. Her body was shaped almost like a large jellybean and seemed to float above her two long paws. She had darker green stripes on her back and tufts of hair of the same color between her two small, round ears. Her turquoise tail was wagging excitedly.

“Just five more minutes, Mom,” Louie mumbled into his pillow.

“Woof!” Finally losing patience, Yummy dug through Louie’s gag bag and pulled out a full and very bubbly seltzer bottle. Gripping it tightly in her oversized jaws, she soaked her owner with a big splash.

Ack!” Louie cried as he jumped straight up and hit the ceiling. “Alright, you darn Doodle! I’m up! Here’re your morning jellybeans,” he said grumpily after dropping back onto the floor. He reached into a pocket and pulled out some multicolored jellybeans to feed to Yummy.

She took them eagerly and almost immediately walked away to go outside, the heart floating above her head showing her appreciation. Doodles have the ability to show their emotions and thoughts by showing pictures above their heads.

Louie pulled some clothes out of his wooden double-doored wardrobe and dressed. Today he was wearing a light blue t-shirt with the seemingly random number “19” centered on both the front and the back. He wore dark blue jeans-style shorts that matched his shirt well. Like most of Toontown’s citizens, and ducks in particular, Louie preferred to keep his webbed feet bare.

After breakfasting, checking his gag supply, and refilling his jellybean bag, Louie followed Yummy out of the door of his small house and onto the estate he shared with his friends.

No one was there.

“Guys?” Louie called out. “They should be up by now…,” he said, more to himself than to Yummy. She was standing right next to him and looking just as worried, as the sad face above her head showed. She whimpered and the sad face changed into the likeness of a wacky-looking robot.

“You saw a Cog?” Louie asked with considerable surprise. Yummy seemed to consider that for a moment and then nodded earnestly. “But they were all kicked out of Toontown over a month ago!” Louie continued. “We’d better head over to Daisy Gardens to see if something is going on at the old Sellbot HQ.”

Immediately, Louie pulled two portable transportation holes seemingly out of nowhere and plopped them flat onto the grass. He and his pet each hopped into one, teleporting to their destination with worry for their friends urging them on.
