Words Of Wisdom {Page Twenty Five}

Man is a growing gestalt. Every day new things are to happen. Every day you have to absorb the new and to make a place for the new; the old has to be gone. The old has to be said goodbye to, with all thankfulness.

~Mahendra~

Love and magic have a great deal in common. They enrich the soul, delight the heart. And they both take practice.

~Nora Roberts~

Meditation will not carry you to another world, but it will reveal the most profound and awesome dimensions of the world in which you already live. Calmly contemplating these dimensions and bringing them into the service of compassion and kindness is the right way to make rapid gains in meditation as well as in life.

~Hsing Yun~

We always perceive outside objects so our knowledge is limited. We get the worldly knowledge but not wisdom. If we go beyond the objective world and perceive the perceiver or see the "seer" or know the "knower", then an explosion in consciousness takes place. Then we get endowed with wisdom. We reach our totality.

~Sharmaji~

A name is just a shadow of reality. People often make life more difficult for themselves in the quest for status and gain. Only by abandoning name and merit will one find the true treasure of life.

~Xu You~

In meditation we leave The fires of defilement For the coolness of clear samadhi. And this feels just like the joy Of falling into cool, clear water After burning in the heat of the sun.

~Perfection of Wisdom~

The future is not something we enter. The future is something we create.

~Leonard I. Sweet~

New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights.

~Hamilton Wright Mabie~

Let life be a natural spontaneity. The only golden rule is that there are no golden rules.

~Osho~

When you enter this Dharma door, Sitting upright, you become Buddha. Upon reaching the other shore You attain perfection.

True aspirants of the Tao Contemplate their own mind. Knowing Buddha lies within, There is no need to search outside.

~Master Fu~

Everyone's a star and deserves the right to twinkle.

~Marilyn Monroe~

We do not receive wisdom; we must discover it for ourselves after a journey that no one can take for us or spare us.

~Marcel Proust~

It is the mind that frees us or enslaves. Driven by the senses we become bound; master of the senses we become free.

~The Amritabindu Upanishad~

There are examples of how perfectly realized people never uttered a single word or half a phrase without purpose. Whenever they tried to help others, they never gave random instructions, and they did not approve people arbitrarily. Nowadays there are teachers all over who sometimes speak correctly and sometimes speak without a grasp. Why? Because they have not yet attained perfect realization. Sometimes they approve people and say they are right, but then sometimes they say they are not right; how is it possible to clarify "from birth to death, it's just this person" in such a manner?

~Foyan~

Why desire at all? Desiring a state of freedom from desire will not set you free. Nothing can set you free, because you are free. See yourself with desireless clarity, that is all.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj~

When you look closely, you see that people of the present are none other than people of old, and the functions of the present are none other than the functions of the past; even going through a thousand changes and myriad transformations, here it is just necessary for you to recognize it first hand before you can attain it.

~Foyan~

Truth is perfect and complete in itself. It is not something newly discovered; it has always existed. Truth is not far away. It is nearer than near. There is no need to attain it, since not one of your steps leads away from it.

~Dogen~

The Way does not need cultivation; Just don't pollute it. What is pollution? As long as you have a fluctuating mind, Creating artificialities and pursuing inclinations, All is pollution. If you want to understand the Way directly, The normal mind is the Way. What is normal mind? It has no artificial contrivance, No right or wrong, no grasping or rejection, No ordinariness and no sanctity.

~Ancestor Ma~

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being.

~Carl Jung~

Vision. It reaches beyond the thing that is, into the conception of what can be. Imagination gives you the picture. Vision gives you the impulse to make the picture your own.

~Robert Collier~

We all came into this world gifted with innocence, but gradually, as we became more intelligent, we lost our innocence. We were born with silence and as we grew up, we lost the silence and were filled with words. We lived in our hearts and as time passed, we moved into our heads. Now the reversal of this journey is enlightenment. It is the journey from the head back to the heart, from words back to silence; getting back to our innocence in spite of our intelligence. Although very simple, this is a great achievement.

~Eckhart Tolle~

The way to true spirituality Cannot depend upon others; One instant of enlightenment And I go beyond body and self. The myriad and profound virtues Are complete; Anywhere in the universe is now my home.

~Mokuan~

In truth only those are alive who have escaped the bondage of the flesh as from a prison, while that which you call life is in reality death.... Since it is clear that whatever is self-moving is eternal, who will deny that this power has been given to soul? Whatever possesses life is moved by an inner and inherent impulse, and this impulse is the very essence and power of soul.... Train it in the noblest ways! This journey it will make the swifter, if it looks abroad, while still imprisoned in the flesh, and if, by meditating upon that which lies beyond it, it divorces itself as far as may be from the body. For the souls of men who have surrendered themselves to carnal delights, who have made themselves slaves of the passions, and who have been prompted by lust to violate the laws of gods and men, wander about near the earth itself after death, and do not return hither until they have been driven about for many ages.

~Cicero~

On no account brood over your wrong doing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.

~Aldous Huxley~

Human beings only learn and evolve through relationship. The only way we can see ourselves objectively is through the reflection of others. We can go off and sit in a cave and meditate for years, but we only really find out what happened in that cave when we come out and get involved with other people. So we need each other if we want to evolve.

~Andrew Cohen~

The moon and the paper are the same white. The pupil of the eye and the ink, both black. This mysterious meaning remains a circle, Beyond the possibility of understanding.

~Sokuhi~

A free man belongs to himself and nobody else. A free man is simply an energy with no name, no form, no race, no nation.

~Osho~

Follow the opportunity to seek out perception, But you must travel the path alone. If you have not found illumination, Go where you may achieve completion.

~Ch'en Hsien~

Enlightenment is a rare combination of innocence and intelligence, having words for expression and, at the same time, being very silent. In that state, the mind is fully in the present moment. Whatever is necessary is revealed to you in such a natural and spontaneous way, you just sit and the song of the nature flows through you.

~Sri Sri Ravishankar~

Understanding can come only at the appropriate time, and no one can say when. All that can be said is that the understanding cannot come so long as there is expectation, so long as there is a "me" wanting it.

~Balsekar~

In the realm of True Purity, there is no such thing as "I" or "He" or "She," nor can "friend" or "foe" be found there. But the slightest confusion of mind brings innumerable differences and complications. Peace and disorder in the world, the distinction between friend and foe in human relationships, follow upon one another as illusion begets delusion. A person of spiritual insight will immediately recognize what is wrong and before long rid themselves of such an illusion.

~Muso Kokushi~

Just witness your mind and the meditation will be happening. And once you have got in tune with your being, you know the way, you know the how. Then it does not matter where you are. Alone or in the crowd, in the silences of the forest or in the noises of a marketplace, it is all the same. You can simply close your eyes and disappear inwards.

~Osho~

The state of your life is nothing more than a reflection of your state of mind.

~Dr. Wayne Dyer~

The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.

~William James~

A good barometer to determine whether something will be of benefit materially, is whether it is the proper thing to do spiritually. A business venture that implies breaking your moral principles will also be detrimental materially. At times, we experience tremendous pressure when our ethics seem to stand in the way of success, but this is only an illusion. The spiritual and the material are in conflict only to our subjective eyes. In fact, they work in harmony as one.

~Tzvi Freeman~

Seeing the Way is like going into a dark room with a torch; the darkness instantly departs, while the light alone remains. When the Way is attained and the truth is seen, ignorance vanishes and enlightenment abides forever.

~Sutra of Forty Two Chapters~

Those who cannot forgive others break the bridge over which they themselves must pass.

~Confucius~

Relate with others, but relate with yourself also. Love others, but love yourself also. Go out! - the world is beautiful, adventurous; it is a challenge, it enriches. Go out fearlessly - there is nothing to lose, there is everything to gain.

~Osho~

Don't you know that afflictions are Nothing more than wisdom, But to cling to your afflictions Is nothing more than foolishness: As they rise and then melt away again, You must remember this The sparrow hawk flies through Silla Without anyone noticing.

~Benming~

A statement made from the heart has an aroma, it has lights, it has earth and sun and moon. It is colorful and it grasps the attention of those around you, like the sunset.

~Beth Johnson~

My doctrine is to think the thought that is unthinkable, to practice the deed that is non-doing, to speak the speech that is inexpressible, and to be trained in the discipline that is beyond discipline. Those who understand this are near; those who are confused are far. The Way is beyond words and expressions, is bound by nothing earthly. Lose sight of it to an inch, or miss it for a moment and we are far away from it.

~Sutra of Forty Two Chapters~

The miracle is this... the more we share, the more we have.

~Leonard Nimoy~

Do not look for peace and freedom in the outside world. Real freedom and real happiness are inner states which are yours when you are in harmony with the divine.

~Ramdas~

Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.

~Lee Holz~

You see many stars in the sky at night, but not when the sun rises. Can you therefore say that there are no stars in the heavens during the day? Because you cannot find God in the days of your ignorance, say not that there is no God.

~Sri Ramakrishna~

I understand that the whole manifestation and life is nothing but a dream, a play. I am playing the whole game. I am simply enjoying life.

~Kiran~

Human nature is developed by profound Serenity and lightness, Virtue is developed by harmonious Joy and open selflessness. When externals do not confuse You inwardly, Your nature finds the condition That suits it; When your nature does not disturb Harmony, virtue rests in its place.

~Huai-nan-tzu~

You never know what gift you could have given, just by being the real you.

~Dr. Joseph Dremer~

The surest sign of spiritual progress is a total lack of concern about progress. There is an utter absence of anxiety about anything like liberation and a sort of hollowness in one's being, a kind of looseness and involuntary surrender to whatever might happen.

~Balsekar~

You can stand tall without standing on someone. You can be a victor without having victims.

~Harriet Woods~

Everyone who read my poems must protect the purity of their heart's heart cut down your craving continue your days modestly coax the crooked and the bent then you'll be upright drive out and chase away your evil karma return home and follow your true nature on that day you'll get the Buddhabody as swiftly As Lu-ling runs

~Han-shan~

Don't wait for your "ship to come in" and feel angry and cheated when it doesn't. Get going with something small.

~Irene Kassorla~

Vibrating within The ear are many voices But their origin Has a source which may be called The sound of no sound.

~Takuan~

Appreciate your learning process, for it is of equal value to have realized there is a need for change as for the change itself.

~Beth Johnson~

The fuel in the tea brazier is burnt out, So I collect pine needles, The fields of medicinal plants are empty, So I cut vegetable roots. Naturally dull, I've forgotten Zen activities, My gate is darkened at noon by The shade of ancient trees. White clouds impart a sense of peace To my Zen meditation, Green grasses suffice to make a rug for my guests. What I have collected is a hundred years Of emptiness.

~Isshi Bunshu~

One of his followers urged the Buddha to perform a miracle in order to attract some nonbelievers.

The Buddha replied:

"I detest and will not undertake the so-called miracles of magic power and divination. I and my followers attract non-believers only by the miracle of truth.

~Digha Nikaya~

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

~Michael Jordan~

What does the word "Master" mean? "Master" means you already know how to master yourself, and you are not torn apart by different obstacles in life.

~Ching Hai~

~Sigmund Freud~

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

~Benjamin Franklin~

Laughter is spiritual health. And laughter is very unburdening. While you laugh, you can put your mind aside very easily. For a man who cannot laugh the doors of the buddha are closed.

~Osho~

The cause is right now; the result is at the moment of death. When the resultant action is already manifest, how can you fear? Fear is over the past and present; since the past had a present, the present must have a past. Since there has been enlightenment in the past, there must also be enlightenment in the present. If you can attain now and forever the single moment of present awareness, and this one moment of awareness is not governed by anything at all, whether existent or nonexistent, then from the past and the present the Buddha is just human, and humans are just Buddhas.

~Pai-chang~

Things in this world are not always as we wish. When we cannot change circumstances outside of us, we can still change ourselves; and that, often, can help us reach the same goal.

~Heart Sutra~

~Hakuin~

Oh life! Live it fully, abundantly. Do not look back, do not look at others, follow that flame which burns inside yourself. Dare, take risks, and there is nothing you will regret, and there is plenty you will get.

~Itnash~

Everything we see about us is but a reflection of that which is above. A king in our world is a reflection of the concept of Kingship above. The sweetness of a fruit is a reflection of the sweetness of the Supernal Wisdom. The form of the human body reflects the inner structure of the cosmos, so that each limb and organ parallels a particular Divine force. Each of these things descends from its G-dly place into our material realm to take tangible form --so that we can grasp those G-dly concepts from which they extend. Even those inventions that only arose in the modern era were in fact hidden all this time within the Creation, waiting for us to discover them and reconnect them with their G-dly source and meaning.

~Tzvi Freeman~

Midwinter, the eleventh month Wet snow falls unceasingly, All the mountains have become the same color; On the myriad paths, human tracks are few. My past journeys now all seem like dreams, The door to my grass hut is deeply covered. All night long I burn small chunks of wood And silently read poems by masters of the past.

~Ryokan~

Remember, there is only one way to meet real friends, wherever you go: be a true friend.

~Yosy Flug~

I crossed seas and rivers, Climbed mountains, and Forded streams in order To interview the masters, To inquire after Truth, To delve into the secrets of Zen; And ever since I was enabled to Recognize the path. I knew that birth and death are not The things I have to be concerned with. For walking is Zen, Sitting is Zen, Whether talking or remaining silent, Whether moving or standing quiet, The Essence itself is ever at ease; Even when greeted with swords and spears, It never loses its quiet way, And all that befalls cannot perturb Its serenity.

~Yoko Daishi~
