The
Descendents of William Oxborough of Beckham Well or Bechamwell Co Norfolk. |
Many alternative spellings of
both surnames and place names occur. |
This page
sets out the only part of our ancestry that can be classed as seriously
rich, landed gentry. The line seems to have died out, leaving us mere
peasants to inherit the name. There are not many of us either, but we
have many relatives descended from female 'Oxbrows' spread throughout
the world. Your present author is the eldest of the eldest Oxbrow
through 7 generations at least of the male line and I have two sons to maintain the name
for a few more generations. Between the last of those on this sheet and
my earliest traced ancestor is a gap of a (turbulent) century and the
100 or so miles from Norfolk to Bocking in Essex. There is, of course no
reason to presume direct decadency from this elite family as there have
emerged at least two other contemporary genetic lines, both artisan
class and little doubt there will be found those of the agricultural
labouring class also. |

Generation 6 Children of Lawrence and Dorothy Oxborough Hewar[B]
Oxburgh of Emworth John Oxburgh
of W. Walton, clerk d.1678 m.
Jane
Nixon. Complacency as to his residence is ill advised. Lawrence snr,
Dorothy and Lawrence jr all died in 1664 (a plague year). Hewar and Henry
had already taken on a 1,000 acre estate in Bovin, Queen's County, Ireland
(near Daingean, Ofally as now is) on a Socage lease from the Crown. The
natives had been forcibly relocated to west of the Shannon to a region
that was in 1550 so sparsely populated as to be described as
"uninhabited". For clerk we should, of course read "clerk
in Holy Orders", no noted "living" so one can almost
presume a Catholic priest. We find that Lawrence snr paid the Hearth Tax
on Emneth Hall for Michelmas 1664 but a John paid on 3 much smaller
properties in surrounding villages, just the right sort of old early Tudor
manor halls to support a bailiff and the unmarried hired labour. (Hearth
Tax returns Mich: 1664) Lawrence

A History Lesson Background to the period. Lest we all imagine that
all was at peace with the world, as did Jane Austen, I will hasten to
disillusion you all. Tudor and Stuart England including the Republican era
was a World in turmoil. Cromwell himself described it as "the world
turned upside down" Catholic, Christian and Puritan were in continuous
armed conflict (excuse the distinction, but that is how they viewed
themselves). Catholics were a hunted and persecuted minority. Just
recollect the fate of the Jews in "Christian" Germany and Russia
within living memory, it was at least as bad as that era. Massive fines
were imposed for non-attendance in the established protestant church,
whether mainstream or puritan leading to utter impoverishment of the
staunchest Catholic families, including most branches of the Oxbrow
"clan". Over many generations we have converted to just about
every religion and none but in the era of this little study we were
staunch catholics and supporters of the catholic kings of Scotland and
Ireland, James I and II and the old pretender. So here goes with a lesson
on rebellion in old England, Scotland and Ireland. See also link to Henry

Generation 7 Children of Hewar [B] & Frances Hewar [C] of Emneth 1681-1729 m Diana, da. of James Whithall Primary
source does not list wife or children but Playfair's Irish Peerage
mentions a daughter, Thomasina. The
link to Henry's page will give a more detailed potted history of the
Plantation of Liex-Ofally and the subsequent Jacobite engagements
from the siege of Derry to the battle of Culloden, all of which
involved members of the family in high positions and resulted in loss of
much life and lands. Margaret
Frances also possibly John and James born in Ireland

Generation 8 Children of Hewar[C] & Diana There seem to be three unnamed children. The list in Harl. Soc. finishes here Irish sources list 3 sons, all named. I am still trying to trace information and descendants. Hewar left a will that still survives which, when I get the chance I will get out of the National Archive.
