R&B Vocal Groups
Of The 1950s
Some of the best music ever made came out of the 1950s.

Much of this came from the R&B vocal groups that exploded on the scene after The Orioles' seminal
"It's Too Soon To Know" in late 1948.

Nothing before sounded like this, and nothing would be the same after
.

My favorites are the ballads.  When Sollie McElroy of the Flamingos, or Sonny Til of the Orioles starts to sing, you can imagine the angels listening in!!

Other groups, like The Spaniels, The Moonglows, The Swallows, The Ravens, The Cardinals, etc., gave us songs that will live forever.  Some of the ballads are just as sublime today as they were almost 50 years ago!!

Almost as much fun as listening to the music from the '50s, is talking about it.  One of the best places to do that is in the following newsgroup:

Lively discussions are always the norm on this group.  Come join in, or just sit back and watch the fun as we sometime agree, and often disagree on all aspects of '50s music.

Also, check out the links on the right side of this page!!  A couple of Yahoo groups where "doo-wop" is the subject of the day, everyday!!

On the next few pages, I will take you on a journey through some of the groups of the era,  and the labels they recorded for.

All of the label scans on this, and the following pages, are from records in my collection.

Let's start with a short history of the great Atlantic label.  Just click "
