Trivia:
Baz Luhrmann presented and produced the song that
hit the charts in 1999, "Everybody's Free (To Wear
Sunscreen)"
He
attended the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA)
in Sydney. While he was at NIDA, he was choosen to
assist on Peter Brook's play " The Mahabarata". The
following year he wrote and staged "Strictly Ballroom".
After that he took Strictly Ballroom to the World
Youth Theater Festival in (what was then, in 1985),
Czechoslovakia. He won awards for Best Production
and Director. When
he graduated from NIDA, he formed an independent theater
group call the Six Year Old Company, which he was
the Artistic Director. With the company he revived
"Strictly Ballroom".
Produced
and directed a hit re-invention of the classic opera
"La Boheme" for the stage in Sydney, taking place
in the 1950s post-war Paris, stressing acting more
than big "Pavarotti style voices", to create an experience
for "people who might be a little intimidated by opera".
It was eventually filmed in 1993 for PBS's "Great
Performances".
In
Moulin Rouge the Orphean myth is central to what Luhrmann
calls a "Red Curtain" theatrical style, which he has
employed in each of his three films.
Luhrmann explains: "We take a simple story based on
a recognizable primary myth and set it in a heightened,
created world that is at once exotic yet also recognizable.
Strictly Ballroom was set in world of ballroom dancing,
and William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in the
heightened world of Verona Beach. In our third film
it's the underworld of the Moulin Rouge in 1899.
My
words: I love Baz's work. I first saw his talented
work in Strictly Ballroom which I loved, the dancing
and story line was so fast you never had time to get
bored. Then I saw Romeo and Juliet. I found it very
hard at first to understand the speech in Romeo and
Juliet but after watching it a second time it became
one of my favorite films. Then Moulin Rouge. What
a film. It is so colorful
