The sailors listed in the index below
all are African-Americans. The story of black sailors in the
Civil War is being told through the collaborative efforts of the National Park Service, Howard University, the Naval Historical Center, and a
team of academic experts, using information from the National Archives. A description
of the project and more information can be found at the National Park
Service's site right
here. The National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and
Sailors database eventually will have information on all Civil War
naval personnel of all ethnic backgrounds.
