Ulises

Back To Captive Orcas

Ulises is a male orca about 26 years old who lives in Sea World California, in San Diego. Ulises was 2 or 3 years old when he was captured on the east coast of Iceland, near Reydarfjordur. He was captured in 1980. He was placed in the Saedyrasafnid Aquarium, then in 1981 he was moved to the Riolen Safari in Spain. Then in 1983, he moved once more, this time to Barcelona Zoo in Spain. When he had grown to full maturity, Barcelona decided to get rid of him because of his depressing moodiness (no female orcas) and (of course) his size! Right now, Ulises is the largest animal in the state of California! Barcelona sent him to California on January 30, 1994, and has stayed there ever since.

Barcelona sent Ulises to California on a 'breeding loan', but the only way they'll get him back is is they make a larger tank, and no plans for this have been made. Besides, the Zoo only made it a loan, because that's the only way he could make it through customs. Ulises is currently the largest animal in the state, weighing over 9,000 lbs! His eyes are two different colours-one is blue, the other brown. His fin was amazingly straight until about 2001 (the last fully mature male to have a straight fin), but now its drooping. He currently lives in Sea World California with Corky2, Kasatka, Orkid, Splash, Sumar, and Nakai.

Ulises is a very sweet whale despite his massive size, who will sometimes rest beside the slideout and watch his trainers. He gets along well with most of the other orcas, except Corky2, who he doesn't seem to like. Unless Kasatka's around to put him in his place, he'll attack Corky. Kasatka, besides disciplining him, seems to mother him sometimes. He plays a lot with Splash, and seems to have a crush on the lovely Orkid (who doesn't really return the affection-occasionally she grants him a little of her time). Sometimes when Orkid is in a seperate tank, he calls for her at the gate.
