FIRST ABDUCTION ATTEMPT?
The Barny and Betty abduction report may not be the first of the modern abductions. What might be the first recorded claim of attempted alien abduction came during the Airship sightings of the late 19th century.

On November 25, 1896, Colonel H.G. Shaw and his companion, Camilla Spooner had left Lodi California, when the horse stopped suddenly and gave a snort of terror.
Shaw claimed that he saw three figures who stood nearly seven feet tall and were thin.
They looked human, they didn't seem to be hostile. Shaw tryed to communicate with the beings. According to Shaw they didn't understand him and reponded with a "warbling" sound in a type of monatone chant.

Shaw continued his discription, reported in the newspapers of the day saying. "They were with out any clothing, but were covered in a natural growth of as soft as silk to touch as their skin was like velvet. Their faces and head s were with out hair, their ears were very small, and thier noses had the appearance of polished ivory, while their were large and lustrous. The mouth was small and there seemed to be no teeth.
Shaw said they had small nailless hands and long narrow feet. By touching one of the beings, he discovered that they were nearly weightless. Shaw believed they weighted less than a ounce.
The beings tryed to lift Shaw with the intension of carrying him away. When they couldn't budge Shaw or his commanion they gave up and flashed lights at a nearby bridge where a large "airship" was hovering.
They walked towards the air ship using a swaying motion and only touching the ground every fifteen feet or so.according to Shaw, "With a little spring they rose to the mashine, opened a door in the side and disappeared...."
This was just an attempted abduction and the beings gave up very quickly, but it does bear some resemblance to a modern day abduction ettempt.

There is another interesting story from that time period, which has elements that could be connected to modern abduction stories. John A. Horen claimed to have met a stranger who invited him to tour one of those "airships". They boarded the craft and toured Southern California and then flew to Hawaii. His wife did not believe his story and he was known as a practical joker.

A week or so later, in early December 1896, two fishermen, Giuseppe Valinziano and Luigi Valdivia, said they had been held captive for a number of hours while the crew of a airship did repairs. The "Captain" of the "craft" was very vague about the origin of the craft,, saying the invention would be announced in the coming weeks.
When the repairs were complete the men were allowed to leave.

It would be nearly twenty years before another abduction account would appear that fits, at least marginally into modern day abduction category.
In August 1915, in Galipoli, Turkey, a British regiment was formed by their commanders to climb a hill near Sulva Bay. As the soliders began to move, six or eight clouds were seen hovering near the hill. One of the clouds slowly descented until it was resting on the ground.
Men of the New Zealand regiment watched as the British soldiers marched in to the cloud When the last of the soldiers had entered, the cloud began to lift. The British soldiers were never seen again.
At the end of the war, British goverment officials demanded to know what happened to the missing regiment. Turkey denied that they ever captured a entier regiment or had fought the regiment.

Airship sightings, mystery cloud formations would be reported over the next quarter of a century. There were reports of strange things in the sky, but such reports were scattered and recieved little attenion. It was not until 1947 when Keith Arnold saw a group of fliyng saucers, that is when unidentified flying objects hit the headlines. The modern UFO era was born.
