Who is Eugene Meyer?

"While ... banker Paul Warburg controlled the Federal Reserve, and international banker Bernard Baruch placed government contracts, international banker Eugene Meyers, a former partner of Baruch and the son of a partner in the Rothschild's international banking house of Lazard Freres, was [President] Wilson's choice to head the War Finance Corporation, where he, too, made a little money.

Eugene Meyer, on June 1, 1933, anonymously purchased the Washington Post at auction, for $825, 000. It is true that Meyers sought to influence national and international politics through the Post, just as be sought influence through various financial maneuvers, but whether that influence can be interpreted as control is open to discussion. ‘His purchase of the newspaper is surrounded in some mystery, particularly the anonymity of the purchase; Meyer himself explains that this was necessary to compete with other bidders, including the original owner of the Post (Evelyn McLean, owner of the Hope Diamond) and Willian Randolph Hearst. Meyer had offered $5 million for the failing newspaper a few years earlier and “felt any open bid of his at a public auction would be an invitation to price-boosting.”

Certainly organized crime was involved in journalism ... and still is. The popular TV Guide is the. product of one of the Mafia’s biggest hoodlums, a now-respected former amakassador (appointed by Nixon) named Annenberg. Walter Annenberg, ambassador to Britain, is the son of Moses Annenberg, a close friend of Al Capone who controlled the Philadelphia Inquirer, Seventeen Magazine, the Daily Racing Form and about 20 other publishing corporations. Moses and his son both got into trouble with the government over income tax evasion. Also, Annenberg was involved with the Hearst family in the beginning of his notorious publishing career. In the 1930s, Moses was said to have had the largest annual income in the U.S. and had to pay $8 million in back taxes. Walter got off through a deal in which his father agreed to plead guilty. Annenberg is only one of several Mafia publishing barons.

Also deeply involved in publishing are a number of other “respectable” U.S. leaders who have shadowy backgrounds, among them the Rockefellers. It’s a simple fact of life that the news media exercises vast control over the minds of the American people, whether through small community newspapers or through CBS and NBC. This reality did not escape those who wanted to hide their activities from the people and who had the money and power to do so.

There exists an intricate and almost-impossible-to-untangle web of financial connections among various persons linked to organized crime - stretching from the Rockefellers to the Howard Hughes empire. The CIA itself has also been heavily involved in publishing ventures in the US and abroad in an effort to influence public opinion.

It would take a book-length manuscript to elaborate on these intricacies.

Let it suffice to note that Senator Estes Kefauver (later alleged to have been murdered by the Mafia) reported in 1951 that this syndicate-controlled publishing empire was “Public Enemy Number One.”
