Accessories

We may be playing with Super Power, but Super Power doesn't have enough buttons or a comfortable grip. We need options! Here are some options I've collected from those who had no appreciation for what they were.

SNES CONTROLLER
SNES Controller
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Model: SNS-005
Type: Controller

The NES controller, evolved. Seemingly taking what it had learned from the NES MAX, Nintendo brought much- needed curves to the controller, with four more buttons to expand control options for games. Double the buttons for double the bits.

SUPER FAMICOM CONTROLLER
Super Famicom Controller
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Model: SHVC-005
Type: Controller

Before there was a Super Nintendo, there was the Super Famicom. Its controller is largely the same as the US version, only it looks a bit neater, and has a much shorter cord due to Japanese rooms being about nine cubic centimeters on average.

HIGH FREQUENCY CONTROL PAD
High Frequency Control Pad
Manufacturer: High Frequency
Model: 4012
Type: Controller

Despite being an odd looking controller with transposed face button colors, the High Frequency Control Pad remains a pretty good controller, even compared with the Nintendo-made gamepads. The molded grips do little to nothing for the sake of ergonomics, but they at least don't hamper gameplay. As High Frequency is just a brand, and not a descriptor, this controller has no turbo fire functions. It is distributed by Toys "R" Us.

SUPER SCOPE
Super Scope
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Model: SNS-014
Type: Light gun

"It's more than just death... it's being... undone."

The Super Scope is Nintendo's successor to the Zapper for the NES. It features the expected fire button, as well as a pause button and a cursor button. Rapid fire is available via a setting of the power selector switch. The function of the Super Scope is leagues above that of the Zapper, in that the scope uses precise timing to determine the position of the pixel the user is aiming at by tracking the raster scan beam and checking its position against the SNES picture processing unit.

Ever being opposed to liberty, Nintendo designed the Super Scope to be far less gun-like, instead fashioning it after the Carl Gustav recoilless rifle. This served them well when they threw Sega under the bus during the 1993 Congressional hearings on video games.

SUPER MULTITAP
Super Multitap
Manufacturer: Hudson
Model: HC-698
Type: Multiplayer adapter

Released in September of 1993 in a package with Super Bomberman for the price of two whole games, the Super Multitap brought expanded multiplayer options to the Super Nintendo. Electronic Arts took particular interest in the Multitap, in that they no longer had to develop their own such hardware as they had with the Genesis. Sports games aplenty make use of the Super Multitap, but interestingly, non-sports games, like Square's Secret of Mana do as well. A three-player action RPG? Sign me up!

SUPER NES MOUSE
Super NES Mouse
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Model: SNS-016
Type: Controller

Released with Mario Paint in August of 1992, the Super NES Mouse brought even more control options to the Super Nintendo, opening the system up to more types of games that thrive with mouse input. Wolfenstein 3D and DooM were supported, but also unexpected games like Lamborghini American Challenge, which in its insanity also uses the Super Scope to destroy opponents' vehicles.

SUPER GAME BOY

Super Game Boy
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Model: SNS-027
Type: Compatibility upgrade

Released in June of 1994, the Super Game Boy brought the library of the Game Boy to the Super Nintendo. In addition to allowing players to play their Game Boy games on their televisions, the Super Game Boy also added limited color to many games. Later Game Boy titles even included special enhancements for the Super Game Boy, such as Space Invaders including SNES-exclusive content accessible only by playing the game via the Super Game Boy. Lamentably, the timing crystal used in the Super Game Boy makes games run about 2.4% faster than they should. Hardware modifications can resolve this issue, but most players won't notice the speed difference.
Unfortunately, the PAL version does not work with a US Super Nintendo, but it does look pretty neat.

GAME GENIE
Game Genie
Manufacturer: Galoob
Model: 7353
Type: Game enhancer

Continuing the course of bringing supernatural powers to game players, Galoob's Game Genie for the Super NES improves upon the original Game Genie for the NES by allowing the use of more codes, which can produce more complex modifications to games, even somewhat restoring the blood in Mortal Kombat. Sad that this even has to be done, not that it brings back the gallons of Ragu spaghetti sauce that splashes out of everyone when punched in the jaw.
Nintendo, ever frustrated over their poor showing in court over the Game Genie, revised the Super Nintendo to disallow use of the device. Of course, Galoob swiftly released an updated version of the Game Genie to get around this.

XBAND MODEM

XBAND Modem
Manufacturer: Catapult Entertainment
Model: 00100
Type: Modem

In an attempt to bring online, head to head gaming to the home video game console market, Catapult Interactive has developed and released the XBAND modem for the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The modem functions by forming a client-to-client connection via telephone call, rather than a call to an Internet Service Provider. Playing outside of one's area code requires a call to the Xband service itself for connection with distant players. Users can pay for either an allotment of 50 matchers per month for $4.95, with additional matches costing $0.15 each, or unlimited matches for $9.95. Or instead of jumping through these hoops and racking up extra costs, players can simply hop on their computer, connect to their ISP, and play computer games online.
