Recently released in the United States on September 9th, 1995, with a massive ad campaign informing people that they were not ready, and that the PSX would be ready on the ninth of September, the system has shown up seemingly everywhere. Launching with a $299 price tag, the system has vastly undercut the competition, most especially the 3DO. The PlayStation comes with one controller, a demo disc, a power cable, and A/V cables, but no memory card. You'll have to pick one of those up on your own.

Jumping headfirst into CDROM media, the PlayStation library is sure to fill with a wide variety of titles, thanks to the low manufacturing costs of CDROMs. No more $70 games just because they needed more ROM space or custom chips. The discs themselves are pretty interesting, being nearly black in appearance. Rumors say that this prevents them from being copied, but if that was the case, I wouldn't be able to play the music tracks on my computer or in my CD player.

On that note, music CDs seem to sound better when played through the PSX for some reason. Maybe Sony used some of their high quality DAC chips in the systems? I don't have the equipment to confirm this.

The PlayStation uses region locking and copy protection to keep people from importing games and from acquiring bootleg copies. For the former, it's not very difficult to import a Japanese PlayStation. As far as bootlegs go, you're on your own. Scuttlebutt says that there's some sort of modification chips being researched, but I'm not taking a soldering iron to my new system.
