INTRODUCTION

The lands held by the family of the Grafen von Anhalt, in the southern part of the German province of Saxony, consisted originally of the counties of Ascania, Aschersleben and Anhalt itself.  The county of Ascania was a fief of the dukes of Saxony.  It was acquired in [1100] by Otto "der Reiche" Graf von Ballenstedt[1], although the previous fief-holder has not been identified.  It was consolidated into the Westphalian lands of the Ballenstedt family together with the county of Aschersleben, which also appears to have been a Saxon fief.  On the death of Bernhard Duke of Saxony in 1212, Ascania and Aschersleben were inherited by his older son Heinrich, while his younger son Albrecht succeeded as duke of Saxony.  The reason for the older son inheriting what appears to have been the family's less important territories and titles is unclear.  Consciousness of this apparently inferior position, and a wish to avoid swearing fealty to his younger brother, presumably prompted Graf Heinrich to claim the status of imperial prince (Reichsfürst) from [1215].  The county of Aschersleben is mentioned in the 1220s as a direct fief of the empire.  It retained this status, although no documentary evidence of the original grant has survived[2].  The title Reichsfürst was eventually granted to Graf Heinrich's son in [1252/53].

The origin and early status of the county named Anhalt is unclear.  It was presumably of minor importance compared with the counties of Ascania and Aschersleben in the 12th and early 13th centuries.  However, over time it became the dominant family name applied to all the family's territories.  The early counts and princes of Anhalt appear never to have played a major political role, either locally in Saxony/Westphalia or nationally within the empire.  The Anhalt territories survived as separate political entities until the fall of the German Empire after the First World War, under the rulership of the same family.  It is probable that their lands were not considered of sufficient political and economic importance to have become the object of hostility from their more powerful neighbours.
