After purchasing my 1990 Montero in 1997, I realized that my 235x75R15 wheel's would not be enough for true off road use.  Since I my engine was being rebuilt already (bad maintenance record from the prior owner), I knew that I would have enough power for up to 33" tires but I would need new rims for anything larger than a 9.5" wide tire.

The tire size I was intending on using was a BFG 32x11.5" Mud Terrain (Figure 1).  I ended up putting it on American Eagle 15x8" Type 54 rims (Figure 2) with a 6 lug pattern and a -18mm offset.  I've always heard the question... "What's the difference between offset and Backspacing?"  For those of you wondering yourselves, I did a bit of research and created a diagram that helps illustrate the difference a little more clearly (Figure 3).

Anyway, this wheel and tire combination has worked quite well for me.  For my next step, I will be replacing the 32x11.5" tire with a 33x12.5" tire.  It's still a toss up as to whether I get BFG MT's again or whether I get Yokohama Geolander's this time.   I'll update this page once I decide.

As far as current mileage, I've driven over 100k miles on the current set of BFG MT's and I should be fine for this upcoming winter.  I will have to replace them by next summer though.
