Suicide Prevention

"Please note that this is not a crisis response program, nor does it provide direct clinical services. If you are feeling suicidal or know someone who is, please contact your local crisis line, mental health centre, hospital, or get in touch with your family physician. We have provided a list of BC Crisis Lines and a Canada wide listing, that may be able to help you in your community. " (Mheccu, 2003)

"Key activities of the Suicide Prevention component of Mheccu include the development of user-friendly resource materials based on research literature, distribution of up-to-date suicide data, and the facilitation of connections and links between communities". (Mheccu, 2003)

This is an excellent site with loads of information.  There are sections on children and youth, adults, recommended readings arranged by topic (and cited in APA vs. 5 :}). I have taken the liberty of coping their opening paragraph at the top of this sheet, because I feel that they will keep an up to date list of crisis lines. The Mheccu site is maintained by the Department of Psychiatry Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia.

This site is also listed under resources for parents.  BC Council for Families provides resources for families and professionals regarding families and family issues. The articles are clear and easy to understand.  The Council also provides training programs:

  • About Nobody's Perfect
"The BC Council for Families provides training, support and resources to facilitators of Nobody's Perfect, a parenting program for parents of children from birth to age five". (BC Council for Families, 2003)
