It's that time of year again where we all come together and celebrate the joy that is rock. The rollin' polling booths started polling. The eligibles have started their campaigning. Yes, it’s Rock Awards season once more. The Rock Awards is an annual tradition that recognizes achievements in the local rock scene. This started in 1994 and has grown in prestige and reputation since then.
As in all
previous awards, all local rock artists who have released a recording 
that
has been aired on the station during the nomination period are eligible for
votes. Both indie recordings and major label releases are eligible. Based
on the listener’s votes, a set of nominees will be drawn up that will
be voted on by NU staff and a board of judges composed of music industry experts,
who will select the final winners.
This year there are two new categories. Best male and best female artist. This is an award to be given to any member of a band regardless of position in the band or any solo artist. Some think this award was created because of the growing number of multi-talented artists out there. Think Raimund Marasigan, who leads Sandwich, drums for Cambio, mixes for Squid 9… you get the drift. Also the Rising Sun award is back from last year. This is actually a strange award, they say its “…an award for artists that first received airplay in NU 107 and have crossed-over to other, more mainstream radio stations”.
