Status Report (2001-11-12)

"The first preparatory meeting for the NTU Alumni Association of Pittsburgh was called by Charlie Chian (Law, '63)on June 29, 1997. Those present at the meeting at Chian's residence are Chian and his wife, Hwei-Jen Yang (Law, '65), Dr. Yee Chung Ho (Medicine, '74) and his wife Tay-An Yee (Political Sci., '73), Dr. Hou-Yuan Wong (Medicine, '73), Shih-Ying Tzeng (Geology, '63), Chuang-Yeh Yang (Mech. Eng., '69), and Wen-Ching Yang (Chem. Eng., '62). The second preparatory meeting was held on October 4 of the same year. The primary topic for discussion in those meetings was the bylaws of the Association. The primary objectives of the Association are to promote interactions among the NTU alumni and between the alumni and the NTU in Taipei, Taiwan. Those promotions include academic, educational, athletic, and recreational activities.

The formal establishment of NTU Alumni Association, Pittsburgh, occurred on November 28, 1997, at Evergreen Chinese Restaurant in Pittsburgh. Altogether about 40 alumni attended the meeting. The bylaws were formally passed in the meeting and Charles Chian was elected the first president of the Association. Along with Chian, four directors were also elected, Shih-Ying Tzeng for academic activities, Chuang-Yeh Yang as Treasurer, Tay-An Ho (Yee) in charge of recreational activities, and Wen-Ching Yang for membership and communication. This five-member Executive Committee is responsible for the primary functions of the Association.

Presently, there are 60 members in the Association. Among the membership, there is a Fellow of Central Academic of Sciences, Dr. Cho-Yun Hsu (History, '53), and thirteen husband and wife teams. The eldest member is Dr. Hsu and Charles Hwang (Mech. Eng., '53). The youngest is Wei-Hou Lin (Computer Sci., '99). He is pursuing an advanced degree at Carnegie Mellon University. Another young alumni, Yi-Kuang Liu (Physics, '92), volunteered to set up a permanent webwite for the Association. The Association also passed a resolution to invite Ms. Rae Yang (wife of Wen-Ching Yang) to be an honorary member. She will perform all secretarial duties related to the Association and maintain the membership list and she will not subject to re-election.

The tenure for directors is one year. When re-elected, they are allowed to serve an additional term. The current president of the Association is Jen Shang (Intern. Trade, '81). The other four current directors are Dr. Yee-Chung Ho, Henry Chuang (Elect. Eng., '56), Shiu-Bi Kao (Agri. Chem., '73), and Ling-Fong Li (Physics, '65).

On September 8, 2001, the Association sponsored a get-together party at Dynasty Chinese Restaurant near Pittsburgh. More than 30 alumni participated. There were also several new members. A resolution was also passed during the meeting to waive the membership fee for student alumni who are pursuing advanced degrees. Except discussions on the Association's bussness, the membership list was updated, the recent news at NTU Taipei were reported, and of course, Kareoke singing to end a wonderful evening."
