Story:

Johnny & Charley

Vassalord is amazing. I purchased it because, first I'm interested in vampires and second because the cover looked interesting. I am a yaoi girl and I had a feeling that this story might just have some of that flavour in it. I was not mislead. However Vassalord is not extensively M/M even though it does have a certain overtone of yaoi influence. The relationship between Johnny Rayflo (Master/Sire) and Charley/Cherry (Dependant/Offspring) shows how the link between them is intense and often overwhelming, as Charley says his need for Johnny is Addictive.

I was prepared to find a story that would be full of simple violence and gore, I had no idea what to expect from the vague synopsis that came with the manga. In truth when it showed up at my Comic shop I'd even forgotten that I'd ordered it but a quick glance at the artwork told me that this story would be worth the effort of purchasing it and it was that and so much more.

There is something deep and intense between Johnny and Charley and Charley and Religion. Charley is a vampire, but he's also a cyborg and he's a devout Catholic with his ultimate goal to become a priest. Right now Charley is a Vampire slayer who will only drink from the fount of his sire (Johnny of course) because to drink the blood of a mortal (or another vampire I suppose) would forever curse him in the eyes of God and he'd never be able to achieve his dreams.

I understand that this manga is a series with at least 3 volumes maybe more (I will update as I learn more about it), but the first book alone has enough material for at least one Anime season. It flowed incredibly well and it had really good, interesting chapters were new characters were introduced who will likely continue to flesh out the story and add to the mystery of Vassalord. And there is a mystery. I don't want to give them away. So just read it and find out.

Art:

The art quality is definitely right up there with some of the best mangaka's out there. I don't like to compare artists so I won't. I found it usually easy to follow though occasionally the bodies look a bit elongated and once in a while a scene was a bit of work to figure out. Expressions though were well done and there was no need to try to guess who was who, there was definitely nothing like cloned characters here which one would look suspiciously similar to another. *coughclampcough* The only time there was a likeness of character was for a good reason which I won't even go into. Read the story and you'll find out what I mean (it's in the Neo Union Church segment). Otherwise I am deliciously happy with Vassalord and highly recommend it. Art and Story definitely work perfectly together.

Personal Note: This story is thoroughly enjoyable; the relationship between Johnny and Charley is at once tense and enduring. There is a real emotional connection between Sire and Offspring and I would say a hate/love/need which shows a certain sensuality with out pushing it too far for any of you squeamish quys out there who might take a chance. Also if you look in Johnny's, Charley's and one other's eyes you will see that they are black and deep like an ocean which all light gets sucked into. This series would make a great Anime I think.
