Performance Requirements

The contestant will present a five minute musical theatre audition.

1.     Upon entering the stage, the contestant will announce the number assigned to them and the title of their pieces.  This introduction will not be counted in the five minute limit.

2.     The total performance time must not exceed 5 minutes total time for the selections.

3.     The presentation must include two contrasting songs from musical productions and a monologue bridge between the two.  Dance/choreography should be incorporated into the presentation of the contestant.

4.     Choice of songs must be from musical theatre literature.  The monologue may be created from either a musical or a contemporary play.  Considerable thought should be given to the flow of the material.  Consider how a song might set up a monologue, or consider how the choreography enhances the dramatic action and revelation of character.  View the five minutes as a complete performance with a beginning, middle and end to showcase your best talents.

5.     An accompanist will be provided at the Chapter and at the National Competition.  Music should be clearly marked, easily read, and sent to the Chapter at least two weeks in advance of the audition date.

6.     Contestants may not use hand props, recorded music, or sound effects.  Costumes for a particular character from a musical should not be worn.  Appropriate audition attire should be worn.

7.     An invited audience will be present but will not be allowed to respond to the performance.

Adjudication

1.     Performances will be judged as a whole.  However, the following points will be considered:

A.    Mastery of songs and characterization.

B.    Voice and speech.

C.    Movement, dance and choreography.

D.    Stage presence, presentation well planned with smooth flow.

2.     There will be three (3) qualified judges having no connection with or knowledge of any contestant.  An alternate judge will be available in the event that a designated judge needs to disqualify himself/herself.

3.     Judges will not see any contestant’s name, chapter affiliation, or high school, college, or university affiliation.

4.     Judges will be separated from the audience and from each other during performances.   Judges should not confer between performances.

5.     The judges shall not confer after the last performance and have the option of call-backs before making their final decision.  In the event of a call-back, the contestant will be asked to perform the material previously presented.

6.     Judges’ score sheets may include comments on performances.  Score sheets may be sent to the contestants following completion of the competition.  Awards will not be split, and only one award winner per placement will be allowed.

7.     The decision of the judges is final.

8.     Rules for the National Competition and the local Chapter Competitions are the same.
