Poetry

This poem was written by my mom, Marjorie Wright, in the spring of 1971, at a season of bewilderment in her life, that somehow seemed matched by the lateness of spring that year, when Easter Day lay buried under snow. This spring, 2008, was another late spring, and the final snowflakes of this season seemed to me to be the down of angel wings, as they came to take my mom home that last snowy spring day, April 23, freeing her from the dense cobwebs of dementia and bringing her into true Life. I found this poem among her papers, and it seemed appropriate to share at her home-going celebration. It touched the hearts of many; I hope it touches yours also.

Mom's poem
What has happened to spring this year? The evening
Pungent with promise of new life
Gives way to morning—gentle, lacey, white.
Is nature so upset it has lost its way?
Fear not!
Hath not God said:
“While the earth remaineth,
seedtime and harvest,
and cold and heat,
and summer and winter,
and day and night shall not cease.”1

Easter comes! I fain would find the certainty of Him
within my being.
Yet all the sounds and rush of life
Drown out awareness of the Holy.
How can I find Him for Whom my soul longeth?
Fear not!
Hath not Jesus said:
“I am the Resurrection, and the life;
He that believeth in Me,
though he were dead,
yet shall he live;
and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me
shall never die.”2

Future days, once faced with courage, now stretch
Through tangled hills,
Each hour heavy with perplexity
And clouds hung low.
Where is hope for days ahead?
Take heart!
For God hath said:
“Now the just shall live by faith…3
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise…4
Yet a little while,
and He that shall come will come,
and will not tarry.”5
