Don’t tell Orlando Jordan the odds are too great. Don’t say to him he does
not have a shot. Don’t even think about offering him adversity. It will all
just motivate him more! Jordan may be a WWE newcomer, but his lifetime of
battles and overcoming the odds have prepared him to not only face the
rigors that a WWE Superstar must endure, but also to thrive as a result of
these rigors. He has dealt with a (false) diagnosis of autism as a youth,
poverty, a nomadic lifestyle as a child, and even some of the fiercest
forest fires in American history as a member of the U.S. Forest Service, and
when it was all overcome by this youngster, his inner-strength and outer
athleticism made him a perfect candidate for WWE.
After training with Rocky Johnson—the same Rocky Johnson who is The Rock’s
father—Jordan signed a developmental deal with WWE and reported to Ohio
Valley Wrestling to further develop his skills. Shortly thereafter, Jordan
got the call and entered World Wrestling Entertainment. On June 26, 2003,
Jordan made his WWE debut on SmackDown! at Madison Square Garden against
John Cena. Although he did not win the match, he was impressive enough that
when Cena attacked Jordan after the match was over, the Undertaker came to
the ring and even helped Jordan to his feet. Taker took time to shake
Jordan’s hand and congratulate him on a good effort—the ultimate sign of
respect for a WWE rookie.
Jordan has now officially arrived in WWE. The odds to get to the top may not
be in Jordan’s favor, but he has heard that before and knows that long odds
are exactly what motivates him.
