From: Westville, Okla. Favorite Quote: "Business is about to pick up here on RAW!" Career Highlights: Voice of Monday Night RAW When the 200X Black Resistol Hat is coming, you know that business is about to pick up. That is because good Ol’ Jim Ross has entered the arena and it is time to start RAW. For nearly a decade, the big hat and demonstrative voice has been a WWE staple and J.R. is now considered perhaps the greatest announcer to ever hold a microphone. Like many of the Superstars he describes on television to millions of fans each week, Ross began his career announcing for smaller promotions before finally making it to WWE. He was once an announcer for Bill Watts’ Mid-South/UWF promotion and later became an announcer for NWA/WCW television when Jim Crockett, Jr. absorbed the UWF. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, J.R. was one of the top announcers in the old WCW and worked with the likes of Tony Schiavone and Jesse “The Body” Ventura. But Ross’s big break came in 1993 when he left a position as radio play-by-play announcer for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL to work for World Wrestling Entertainment. WWE fans heard J.R. call play-by-play for the first time at WrestleMania IX in Las Vegas, Nevada where he sported a toga for his debut. That event would begin one of the most successful runs by an announcer in the history of sports entertainment. Since joining WWE, J.R. has become nearly as popular as many of the top Superstars in WWE as his work on the air and even in the ring on occasion has made him a WWE institution. He has penned many columns for WWE.com and both magazines for World Wrestling Entertainment and even written two cookbooks for all sorts of southern cuisine. His trademark hat, legendary voice, and unique clichés describing all of the action are another reason why the unique brand of entertainment that is WWE is so beloved around the world. |
