Sonic the Hedgehog was created by Yuji Naka in the Sega Genesis suprise hit, Sonic the Hedgehog. But the colorful birds seen in Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Adventure came from a game called Flicky. Sega switched modes and gave the story to not the bird but the sly blue hedgehog we like to call Sonic. Back then Sega had a Anime characters from Phantasy Star for their mascots. Sonic from then on became one of their emblems. The game Sonic the Hedgehog sold more games then any other games for the console. The team that created Sonic was promoted and called the Sonic Team. The team was then split into to developers, Sonic Team and Sega Institution. The new games where inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog : The Movie . Sega's only motion picture. The film broke even in terms of $$$ and was only somewhat popular in Japan. That only lasted 1 year. Much like Pokemon is now. Except I don't like Pokemon. The film unknown to most people inspired the game Sonic Xtreme. You also notice like the extra skales in back of Sonic that looks similar to Sonic in Sonic Adventure.  The Sega Genesis was a wonderful system to develop for. Sega keep putting many Sonic titles on it. Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3D Blast. In the time of the Saturn. Sonic was down on his luck. The game produced by Traveler's Tails was a lackluster port. However Sonic 3D Blast did have a original theme that showed Sonic in 3D. One thing that gamers hated with Sonic 3D Blast was that it made you dizzy. Very Dizzy. The Saturn control was digital so you could only move the D pad around to play the game. Sonic 3D Blast also became a PC game which served a little more purpose running at 60 frames per second. Sega asked Traveler Tails to create Sonic R since they this got done with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic R was released year later Sonic 3D Blast. The game then got less then average scores and many stayed away from it all together. Sega responded to the public (even more as you find out later) in making what they thought was the early stages of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Xtreme. Sonic Xtreme was a fast paced game. At that time Sega was loosing millions of dollars a week and the game was canceled. Sonic Team which would re-created this game in 1999 was currently working on NiGHTS.

The Sega Gamegear period

Around 1995 Sega released the 16 bit handheld Gamegear. The handheld was an advancement because it was Sega's first Handheld and it had a lighted screen. Sega had trouble finding or making developers interested in making games. The gamegear  died a slow death from then on. Sega though, even though they knew that the handheld was dieing had Sonic Pinball, ports of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Drift all on its handheld. None a huge success. Gameboy took all Sega's profits. Many of the Genesis games where introduced on other consoles such as Sonic CD (PC) Sonic Jam (Saturn)  Sonic Advanced (Gameboy Advance) Sonic Pocket Adventure (Neogeo Pocket Color) Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 (Sega Gamegear)
The Year Sega prepares to announce Bankruptcy

In mid 1998 Sonic was undergoing some dramatic changes. The sonic team had idea's But SEGA also was at its lowest cash reserve ever. The president of Sega was about 2 weeks before he was going National. If this happened would you think that someone else would take over the Sonic francise or the Phantasy Star Franchise. People were trying get rid of Sega Stock because it was badluck. Whos saved SEGA?   Yuji Naka, millionaire, give away his entire fortune to the company, a total of 130 million dollars. Unfortunately he died of a heartattack in 2000.

Sonic's Adventure : The Fresh Sonic

With the new cash, Sega decided to go at it one more time with a larger plain to keep the next console alive. Their plan. To be anti-Saturn like. Now more titles like NiGHTs or Sonic Xtreme. Dreamcast became a bigger hit. Even now with the large selection of games, anti- Segafans admitted that the Dreamcast was better. Sonic Adventure turned out to be SEGA's anchor title.

Sonic Team got to work on this title after the Saturn game Blazing Rangers in 1997. They gave Sonic a more mature look. Cleaned up the game and gave it a repectable storyline. The developer included Knuckles, Amy and Tails in their new game. Sonic Adventure didn't give people a reason to own a Dreamcast but the game did make Sega look good. When Sega turned into a 3rd party developer so that they wouldn't go bankrupted they published the sequel of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 : Battle on Nintendo Gamecube. I bet that that suprised some people.

Sonic Goes Underground

A developer called Magicax tries to created Sonic Chaos as a freeware program with elements from both the ports of SEGA genesis with new levels. The game believe or not plays like what you see in the Genesis but also looks like Sonic Advance.
