Version 4.0B                                                                                         Main Features

"Never ever underestimate a free game!"

Note to readers - My rating system is based on free games only. Commercial games usually out class free games, but that doesn't necessary mean that commercial games are more or less fun then free games. In commercial games you usually get a 650MB disc full with levels, music, and professional game play. Free games don't have that and most of them have to manage their game below 40 MB.  So when I rate graphics a ten, that means that the graphics are in high resolution and they've achieved a lot to get there.  90% of games still run on low resolution. In Game play I look for the fun part of games. It should be easy to maneuver around without getting killed. Or that the game has a lot of guns like in a first person shooter. For example, the US Army out did themselves by using the Unreal Tournament engine to create exceptional graphics for a free game. It remains one of the best free games to download on the Internet. In the music department I look for a good instrumental jingle. I usually rate higher if the game has CD quality music. Because all free games should have this because of MP3, OGG, and WMA formats available all over that compresses music roughly one megabyte per minute.

Graphical anime game with polsihed gameplay and graphics. What makes this game stand out is that it's comes with 8 - 10 levels which are pretty and complicated at the same time.  I only recently heard of Embolment of the Scared Devil and this game is it's sequel.  Gamecube owners will probably know of Atari's Ikaruga. This game is simular in gameplay mechanics to that game. That award winning Gamecube shooter. This game has MP3 format quality music so it sounds better then those old midi games.   Try it out for your self and see why it's one of the anime greats.

Summing up Perfect Cherry Blossom

Graphics

10.0

The graphics are simple, but you have real anime artwork in the game. The game gets odd like .Hack does when it features anime as bosses. But this is the still kind of anime. Your in a 16-MB videogame shooter that'll remind you of the Super Falcom once you played it. This game runs at a solid 60 frames per second.

Control

10.0

The game is hard. But  the control is very easy to manover. Slip through the bullets. And you don't die right away. The game is very repeatitive.

Orginalism

8.0

I don't know where this game gets it from. It's not a real well known game off the Internet. The orginalism is the anime enemies that you fight. Thier are only 3 freeware games I know of that have anime enemies, Parily Shot, this game and Embolment of the Scared Devil.

Sound

8.0

Pretty good sound and sound effects.  It's japaneseish and less then what I favor.

Replayibly

8.5

This game is hard, but it's pretty to look at.

I’m sure you’ve seen Mario in the 8-bit NES long ago. It’s been 18 years since Super Mario Bros was released. In the last 6 years ever since the Internet existed, there was NES emulation. And ever since NES emulation you got a hacked copy of the original game that could easily play on peoples computer. Even rip offs of Mario Bros, Like ”Afro-Mario Bros” (Mario as a hippy playing through the SMB world), Sonic Mario Bros. (Mario playing in Sega Master’s version of  Sonic the Hedgehog) “Zelda Super Mario Bros” along many others. Now this game, a fully recreated Mario game that has different levels is truly better then these other underground Mario clones originally made for the NES after it was dead. This game was Super Mario XP.

I like to think of this game as the ultimate recreation of Super Mario Bros. Except your playing a much more violent Mario game this time around. I even heard that this game was pardoned by Nintendo. This game was made in Japan inspired on Super Mario Bros and Castlevania. This game is the best underground Mario ever made. It is oddly dark without over glorifying the game to make it just right amount of gore so I don’t accuse it from glorifying Mario. When Mario dies, the game shows blood. The levels are twice as long as in the original game 10 years ago. Much all of the game’s secrets, such as the extra life mushrooms in the first level in Super Mario Bros, still show up in this game. In fact you can go backwards because one great thing about this game is that the extra life mushrooms appear twice in the same spot sometimes along with other familiar powerups like the fire flower, hammer, and giant mushroom. Got to love that fire Mario capability!

PROS

  • Having a new Mario platformer that doesn't suck!
  • The heart system which Castlevania had and the powerups were a good idea. The more hearts you collect the longer you stay alive.
  • Fire Mario !
  • Finding the same powerups in the same locations in the orginal Super Mario Bros.

Cons

  • Where's Luigi?
  • What happened to good 'ol Brower. He should be in this game, I must not of came across him yet.

The game doesn’t stray away from the original game made long ago. Mario has all the same moves plus a super jump move if you hold the up key and press shift on the keyboard.

The graphics are close to the original. It hardly takes any computing power to play this game. The backgrounds should be familiar. But the game is increasingly more difficult then the original. Level 1 is as hard as level 3 in SMB. There is a lot of game here. The original game rom was about 150KB. This game is 6MB zipped, 15MB unzipped. I’m positive Super Mario XP is longer then the first game.  There is a ton more alternative routes to go in a level. Everything from Super Mario Bros was recreated perfectly and put in this game in random locations. I find this exciting enough.

The creator calls himself “CNC Darkside” Well CNC Darkside, you made one heck of a Mario Game. You made me wonder if your going to keep adding to this game in new versions. Or what your next accomplishment will bring gamers?

Summing up Super Mario XP

Graphics

5.0

I don't like to take away from such a good game, but the graphics are already a 15 year old technology. Although the game does have a Super Mario Bros feel. It's a  good feeling though  to see Mario platfromers still being made not only on Gameboy but on PC as well.

Control

10.0

This is where the game really shines. The game is easy to control. Mario has all the same moves he once did. Back when games still were made simplily on a 2 button controller like the NES controller and games didn't need to be complex like they are today. Mario can outrun enemies. It closely resembles the orginal game.

Orginalism

8.0

Mario XP is highly orginal because it combines two popular games 10 years ago and pulls off a great game with no messy gameplay mechanics that just don't work too well. The game play mechanics work great.

Sound

7.0

The midi of castlevania and super Mario Bros, just a octive lower

Replayibly

8.5

This game is harder then the orginal. I like it because Mario stars in it.

Type : Shooter

Reviewed on August 20, 2003

My experience with this game is somewhat good. I don't play it much because it's hard to stay alive in enomously hard levels. This game is a shooter from the Genesis. It wasn't made for Genesis, but it does have good graphics. Reminds me of OutRun on Genesis long ago.  This game was enspired by games such as Ikaruga (Gamecube) and Galatica (SNES/PSX/PS2) as well as the once popular cartoon for girls,  Salior Moon  because it is a anime / girlish game. That didn't bother me, a lot of people said that they've tried it and it worked well for them. But it's one of the best shooters of this genre that's on the Internet. The game comes with two highly compressed music soundtracks (OGG format, same format Unreal Tournament uses) So you get CD quality soundtrack in this game, and not midi. Perhaps the best part of it is that the music doesn't suck.  The beat mixes well with the game.  What else can I tell you about his game? It has two playable characters, Parily and some other girl on a broom. One way this game is much like Ikaruga, a surprise hit on Gamecube, since that game can switch firepower to distroy white and black enemies. But at the end, Ikaruga gets distroyed by focasing all it's power on the final boss, which saves the world, but doesn't help the ship any. Parily, the girl on a broomstick, can obsorb certain firepower with her firepower while her friend can obsorb another kind of firepower. So it's like the game Ikaruga in a way.

I like the game because it's not this a few enemies  shooting at you and your not defenseless at all? In fact you can woop there asses in the beginning. It's about having quick reflexes and intellegence. You get more firepower then the guys shooting at you.  This game is strange though. It's purely fantasy not science fiction like the others.  In total there is 8 levels, but their will be more levels in new vesions I beat.  Like many of these shooters, they all come from Japanese sites, so you might have to download it off a minor site like AcidPlay or Mega Games. These sites  keep all of these games posted regularly.  This game is exceptional as far as free games go.

Summing up Parliy Shot

Graphics

9.5

The graphics are in high resolution. Parily Shot is one of those games that took 9 versions to be where it's at. So it keeps getting better and longer. This looks like Crane's first game, and it looks fantastic as free games go.

Control

8.5

You the mouse and the Z and X button to move Parily around on her broom. see can move forward, and back to try to avoid bullets coming at her.

Stability

8.0

 Really stable, runs flawlessly.

Sound

7.0

The game allows you to play songs off your cdrom, but the car sounds are realistic.

Replayibly

8.5

This game is FREE so it's easy to enjoy. But it is not the graphically richest game avalible. It comes with only one track so you have to download an extra 3 MB zip file for other tracks.

My God I never thought that a free racing simulation could look this good. This 10 Megabit file is well worth the download. I have this game for both Linux and Windows. For some reason the game runs at a higher frame rate on Windows then it does on Linux. I first discovered it on Linux which was included with the package.

With the 10 MB download (version 5.0) you get

  • A blazing fast 3D engine capable up too 120 fps at 1600/1200 for high speed computers. Able to run on slower computers as well at lower resolution.
  • One very long, very materially good looking (for a free simulation anyway) tracks which use the mouse to drive cars too start people off  with.
  • A high resolution graphics engine capable of running at a resolution 1600/1200. Has a background with realistic pavement, trees, grass, fan stands, high resolution sky. Car models are very good looking as well. They aren’t just blocky objects like most freeware racing sims are, all cars in this game have bump mapping. Bump mapping is use in all commercial games. You can change between 1st person and 3rd person views.
  • Arcade mode so that you can enjoy competition. Picks all your new tracks at random.  Also gives you an option that allows you to race only 4 tracks at one sitting.
  • Time Attack with a ghost car (That’s awesome that they included a ghost car)
  • Completely stable to use.
  • 4 car models including Porsche, Dodge Viper, BMW, and Audi
  • A free track editor with easy to use drop and drag option (stellar!)
  • Realistic car sounds
  • Online / LAN option.

Although I don’t play this game all the time, this is a FREE game to download. It is powered by the GNU project which powers all Linux games. One disadvantage is most of as will have a hard time running at a higher resolution because the game uses OpenGL. This is graphics acceleration software that does a decent job on OpenGL video cards like Voodoo 3, but has a hard time running on DirectX based video cards like ATI Radeon and Geforce. The difference is that the DirectX video cards are meant to run on Windows, while OpenGL runs on Linux as well as Windows, just not as well.

The game’s control is decent, but not the greatest. I literally feel that I can’t over rate this game even though it’s free; it would not stand up to commercial games like McCollens Rally 2.  That game has full joystick support. But it does use the mouse and the shift key. Move the mouse in front of the car and it’ll move forward, move the mouse right of the car, and the car will turn right. Move the mouse in back and it’ll backup. It’s really straight forward for a free car sim as you can see. My point is free car sims aren’t suppose to be this graphically detailed and straight forward as this one is. New versions of the game will add compatibility to the game.

Summing up Racer 5.0

Graphics

8.0

The graphics are very detailed and run at a really high resolution. The game may not have all the fancy clifts, pitstops, fan base, music like in the commerical games, but this game had to be a small enough download for modem users so they couldn't include all the game. What can't be downloaded from Racer.nl can be downloaded at Racerextreme.com which carries additional tracks and car models. Everything looks good because the game uses dust particle effects, bump mapping (which makes cars not look like a huge block) anti-analysting, fog (makes farway particles look less apparent.)

Control

8.0

Using the mouse to move the car was a good idea. You can use the keyboard to control the car too. The menus aren't too bad either.

Stability

8.0

 Really stable, runs flawlessly.

Sound

7.0

The game allows you to play songs off your cdrom, but the car sounds are realistic.

Replayibly

8.0

This game is FREE so it's easy to enjoy. But it is not the graphically richest game avalible. It comes with only one track so you have to download an extra 3 MB zip file for other tracks.
