It was in the now distant year of 1990 that the Portuguese Underground had the chance to meet a living legend: Quorthon Seth, then on a European autograph-signing tour promoting his new LP Hammerheart. There were two sessions in Portugal, one in Lisbon at the Valentim de Carvalho store of the Alvalade shopping centre and another in Almada, at the Mockba shopping centre. Many of the names of the Portuguese Underground scene of the time were present with their Bathory LPs under their arm to meet the father of the most extreme side of Black Metal who was right then about to father Viking Metal as well. A lot of autographs were given, a lot of pictures were taken, and several interviews were done. How different the Metal Underground was then, and how different must the Portuguese scene have looked to Quorthon, who would later say:

I was down in Portugal many years ago and met hundreds of fans whose everyday situation was totally different from the safe and sheltered life of Swedish youngsters. I had the impression many of them lived a very tough life. Some looked like street kids that hadn't had a bath in weeks. They bought a BATHORY album even though it must have cost them possibly a week of hard and dirty labor if they even had a job.

These words may seem somewhat harsh these days, but if you remember how the scene was in the late eighties and up to say 1991 or so youll have to admit there is little injustice in Quorthons impressions.

Still, those were the days!

Time truly fuckin flies!
