The Portuguese Final was held on March 7th at the Auditório Europa in Lisbon, hosted by Fialho Gouveia & Manuela Moura Guedes. The winner was chosen by an "expert" jury in two rounds of voting - the first to select the top 6 songs and the second to select the winner.

Maria Guinot previously came 3rd in the 1981 Portuguese Final and at the ESC she was 11th. Doce represented Portugal in the 1982 ESC (two members of the group - Teresa Miguel and Fatima Padinha, were also in the group Gemini that represented Portugal in 1978). Paulo De Carvalho and Fernando Tordo were both in the group Os Amigos that represented Portugal in 1977. Paulo also represented Portugal in 1974 and Fernando Tordo did the same in 1973.
