The German Final was held on February 3rd in Studio 1 at the HR Frankfurt, hosted by Karin Tietze-Ludwig. The winning song was chosen by 9 regional juries (at different TV Stations) with 4 members on each jury who awarded each song between 1-5 points.

Joy Fleming came 17th at the Eurovision. Séverine had won the 1971 Eurovision for Monaco, Mary Roos represented Germany in 1972, Katja Ebstein did the same in 1970 and 1971, while Jürgen Marcus represented Luxembourg in 1976.
