We want Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to be called Nanyang University (NU) and Litah to be called Nantah. In 1927, German physicist Heisenberg published his Uncertainty Principle which stated the theoretical limitations imposed by quantum mechanics on certain pair of variables and no quantum mechanical system could simultaneously possess exact position and exact momentum. Spirit and name appear to be another pair of such variables albeit not relevant to quantum mechanics but applicable to a university. In my four years at Nantah 1960 to 1964 up until 1980, I seldom heard people talking about the Spirit of Nantah. Now it is fashionable to talk about it because Nantah no longer exists. After the dispearance of the name Nanyang Technological University and the re-establishment of Nanyang University, Litah alumni will be in the same position as the Nantah alumni today moaning the loss of their alma matar. Then we will hear the Spirit of Nantah no more but the Spirit of NTU. We come, we see, we shall conquer. Home |
