Hi Nantah Alumni,
So far, 43 alumni (out of around 140 by e-mails) participated in the survey. Some participants have answered one or two of the three questions. You are cordially invited to do the survey soon or revise your answer (your choice).
The survey results are very educational. The reasons given by the participants are gien below, followed by the names of the participants. I sincerely thank all the participants for expressing their opinions. Hopefully, we will have more Nantah alumni discussing and sharing different views of Nantah related things.
[1a] NTU is the resurrection of Nantah: No reason given.
............
[1b] NTU is not the resurrection of Nantah:
1. Nantah was booted out of YunNanYuan in 1980.
2. It is impossible.
3. Nantah had three faculties, and NTU has one only.
4. Not until NTU develops into a full-fledge University with all the major faculties.
5. Some crucial changes must be done first. I believe all Chinese high school graduates must be able to attend the Nanyang University by passing the entrance examinations like we all did in our days.
6. I have no feeling of NTU at this stage. They must change the system and environment to take care of Nantah spirit and Chinese culture.
7. Nanyang University was murdered in 1980. NTU is totally irrelevant to NU except forcibly occupied the site.
8. They are trying to whitewash the blunder of closing down Nanyang University that was established under the leadership of the late Tan Lark Sye.
9. Objectives have changed. Do not serve students from Malaysia well. Do not promote Chinese culture.
10. NTU belongs to the Government of Singapore.
11. Nantah and Ntu are different entities.
12. NU and NTU are of different aims in Education. NTU does not "carry-on" NU history but twisting it.
13. The essence of Ntu is not the same.
14. NTU was a tool used to kill our alma mater. We can do that more constructively by working for Nantah's revival ourselves.
15. They are two different identities born under different period time and having different missions.
16. I believe Nantah had not passed it tradition, spirit or etc. to any institution.
17. NTU is in no way related to Nantah. If someone broke into my house, chase me out of the house and claimed all my properties, then I would not call him my friend.
18. Nanyang University and NTU are two different universities in nature.
19. Completely different courses and different (areas of) faculty members.
20. Can not mix, different background, goals and objectives.
21. NTU does not provide "continuity" for Malaysian Chinese Education, which was the main objective for Nantah.
22. Not until the spirit of Nantah is restored. However, every effort should be made in reaching out to NTU.
23. The purpose of the establishment of Nantah in 1953 was to provide teachers for high schools and train professionals and educators (for post-secondary and post-graduate studies) because many Chinese graduates from high schools were NOT accepted to continue at the University of Singapore or the University of Malaya. The purpose of the establishment of NTU is different.
24. More and more old Nantah characteristics are being eliminated including the sceneries and buildings in the campus.
25. However, if the conditions and culture are right, it could be.
26. There is no connectivity of the present NTU and Nantah. NTU is essentially a government-supported university with no obvious distinction from NUS.
27. It is entirely a different educational establishment except it was built on the soil of the original Nantah.
28. My alma mater is a Chinese university not a Singlish university.
[2a] I support Professor Teh's Internet Nantah:
1. It is a constructive project that can provide good values.
2. This is a good way to keep the name of Nantah, Nantah spirit and make contribution to the society
3. Any effort to make Nantah visible again is good. I suppose it is the cheapest way.
4. It re-ignites the interest to re-establish Nantah.
5. It does not solve the real issue. It looks like another version of NTU.
6. This is a most practical way to revive Nantah. I urge all alumni to read the materials on the subject put out by fellow alumni Zheng Fenxing and Fu Wencheng and extend to them our support.
7. I would not support internet Nanda financially. It should go the venture finance market to raise about 5 million to run such a business. I do not think anyone should use Nanda's name as the name for the so call internet Nanda University.
8. Easier to use distance learning.
9. No objection as Nantah alumni's establishing an Internet University.
10. Internet Nantah is still the easier way to "revive" Nantah (assuming the main language is Chinese)
[2b] I do not support Professor Teh's Internet Nantah:
(1) This is NOT easy. I do not think Internet Nantah can compete.
(2) Will you allow a robot to raise your child?
(3) Nantah already long passed away.
(4) The Nantah spirit is not there! I do not see how one can "preserve" and "prosper" Nantah's spirit through Internet. It was the physical campus - YunNanYuan that had nurtured the Nantah's spirit!
(5) Too much work. Where is the funding?
(6) I do not think it would serve any purpose.
(7) The objective and the scope of the Internet Nantah is not clear. It requires huge resources, both financial and human resources to support a viable educational program.
(8) We can channel our effort to support New Era College and Southern College which play significant roles in the private education in Malaysia. Even the MCA sponsored University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) is worthy of our support.
[3a] I support the role of the president of our local Nantah alumni association as vice president of the "Nantah History Writing Committee":
(1) Why not? No harm.
(2) It is the general practice for most associations doing similar things.
(3) They must have loved Nantah more than others to be involved in their branches.
(4) The effort is commendable.
(5) As a leader in an association, he/she should be the right person to be co-opted into the committee.
(6) I endorse the writing of Nantah history with facts, NOT personal opinions.
[3b] I do not support the role of the president of your local Nantah alumni association as vice president of the "Nantah History Writing Committee":
1. The role of the president of my local Alumni Association as vice president of the "Nantah History Writing Committee" is unknown.
2. He/She should be one of the editors.
3. Presidents of local associations do not do any work.
4. I would not give a blank cheque directly or indirectly to an alumni group, apparently a strong supporter of so called "fu ming nantah".
5. There were no proper discussions among the members.
6. Writing history is not a simple task, especially Nantah History. A professionally trained prominent history scholar is required to carry out research on the issues.
7. Appoint a good Editor for the job.
8. I prefer domination of one or two from each local Alumni Association to work on the project till completion to coordinate local views, input and review.
9. Appointing local presidents is a political maneuver which has nothing to do with the actual writing of history. (I like the idea of writing Nantah history, they should recruit the talent from local associations to actually involve in the writing instead of rubber-stamping the committee.
10. Writing history is a serious business and should be in the hands of experts.
Cheers.
