| Greetings to Professor Choong Shin-Piaw | ||||
| Dear Professor Choong, A few Nantah alumni are planning to re-establish Nanyang Univeristy. We have a website for this university which now runs an e-seminar. To us, Nantah is already re-established, at least on Internet. We are sure that you will be proud that two of your students (one of whom is a Hakka) are involved in the process. I am very pleased to send you this greetings from your former students at Nanyang University. Teh Hoon Heng (Zheng FengXing), Mathematics (1955 -1959, 1st Batch), Ph.D.(Belfast) now lives in Canada: Professor Choong knows me. I also attended his lectures before. If you do write something, please add that I send my best regards to him. Foo Min Tett (Fu WenDe), Physics (1971-1975, 16th Batch), an IT professional, now lives in Hongkong: Please send my best wishes to Professor Choong. Lay-tin Choo (Zhang Li Zhen), Physics (1967-1971, 12th Batch), now works for HP in Singapore: It is great to hear about Professor Choong, Please send my very best wishes when you write. Foo Ven Yee (Fu WenYi), Physics (1960-1964, 5th Batch), Ph.D.(London), a Hakka, now has his own IT business and lives in the Olympics City, Sydney, Australia: I remember your story. You told us in the class that you studied in the University of Paris. The French people then usually asked the question: "Are you Japanese?" even when they saw a Chinese because it was insulting to ask the other question. Some Chinese acknowledged that they were Japanese. You were proud to be Chinese in Paris and good on you. China as you know is again a great country. I remember that you came to the optics and modern physics laboratories in afternoons to supervise students in their experimental work. I liked the extremely delicate optical instruments and admired your knowledge and skills in experimental physics. After I graduated from Nanyang, you wrote the testimonial for my further studies. I went to London to do a Ph.D. degree in experimental physics. Eehua Goh (Wu Yihua), Physics (1963-1967, 8th Batch), now works with Royal Bank of Canada and lives in Toronto: Professor Choong was head of Physics for all the years I was in NU. Though his lecture was good, I napped in most of the classes due to a lack of good sleep during those years. I was not his best student. He may not even know me unless he remembered that I was napping in the classes. Anyway, that was in the past. To many alumni, he did his best. I certainly like to be among the alumni sending greetings to him. If the names are given, leave my name to the last. Once a teacher, a teacher for life. We want to say a big "Thank you" to you as a teacher who taught us Physics. Our very best wishes, Yours students, Teh Hoon Heng Foo Min Tett Lay-tin Choo Foo Ven Yee Eehua Goh P.S. Eehua wants his name in the last because he always napped in your classes due to a lack of good sleep. Editor: Professor Choong Shin-Piaw studied Phyics at Paris University in 1920s at Madame Curie's Institute, then a world famous centre for Physics. He was a former Dean of Faculty of Science and Head of Physics Department, Nanyang University, Singapore until his retirement in 1973. Professor Choong retained the title of Emeritus Professor of Nanyang University until its closure in 1980. Professor Choong in his 90s now lives in Edmonton, Canada and is well taken care of by his wife and daughter. Received communications from Edmonton: Professor Choong is in good spirit. Deep down in his heart, The visits of Nanyang alumni to him always bring great joy. He had great pride in being part of Nanyang contributors. We have about eight Nanyang graduates living in Edmonton and are in close connection. We gather many times a year, for Professor Choong's birthday, visits from former Nantah graduates, and Christmas.
