Gloucester National Forest
Gloucester is located just one mile outside of Pemberton and is home to the enormous Karri tree. Some of these giants that we saw were 800 years old with a trunk supporting its sun-shielding canopy over 210 feet in the air. Their towering limbs and surrounding shrub below provide sanctuary to some of the most colorful birds I've seen in the wild.
In the 1930's and 40's several trees like this one were turned into living fire lookouts. At their tops platforms were constructed for firemen to keep a watchful eye on the forest.
This was our view from the top. It was a windy day and even though we were over 200 feet from the forest floor the platform never swayed.
A few crushed crackers and a steady hand is all the wild parakeets needed for a photo. Eat your heart out Phil.
