Gloucester National Forest |
Gloucester is located just one mile outside of Pemberton and is home to the enormous Karri tree. Some of these giants that we saw were 800 years old with a trunk supporting its sun-shielding canopy over 210 feet in the air. Their towering limbs and surrounding shrub below provide sanctuary to some of the most colorful birds I've seen in the wild. |

In the 1930's and 40's several trees like this one were turned into living fire lookouts. At their tops platforms were constructed for firemen to keep a watchful eye on the forest. |

This was our view from the top. It was a windy day and even though we were over 200 feet from the forest floor the platform never swayed. |

A few crushed crackers and a steady hand is all the wild parakeets needed for a photo. Eat your heart out Phil. |
