Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Natural Sciences

Outstanding degree programs in the Natural Sciences are offered at Western Michigan University. Students may begin their studies at Sunway College. After completing one-third of the program, they transfer to the U.S. to complete their chosen degree. Individual majors are identified briefly.

Biomedical Sciences explores the human, molecular, and cellular aspect of the life sciences and includes BioTechnology. Studies focus on cell biology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology and physiology. A Biomedical Sciences major gives students opportunity of career paths: 1) working in clinics and research & industrial laboratories, and associated government services; 2) post-graduate studies in Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology, and 3) after post-graduate studies, practicing as medical doctors, pharmacists, or other medical professionals.

Chemistry is accredited at the top level by the American Chemical Society (A.C.S.). Students completing this major will have direct membership in the A.C.S. upon graduation. This major provides excellent training for those intending a chemistry-related career. This is a particularly valuable major for students intending post-graduate study. (Several other majors within chemistry are also available that require fewer cognate subjects in the mathematics and the sciences.)

Geography offers study in geographic information technology (GIS and satellite digital image analysis) now in demand in Malaysia. Western offers more advanced training in these fields at the undergraduate level than is available in Malaysia.

Geology offers majors in Geophysics (jointly with Physics) and in Hydrogeology. Both these areas are of growing significance in Malaysia.

Mathematics and Statistics majors offer excellent grounding for science-related and social science-related careers. Students may follow careers in business and government where mathematical and statistical issues are of key importance (insurance, pharmaceutical research, demography, economics, health sciences, etc.).

Physics offers several majors besides a modern physics major, including physics with options focused on: 1) electrical engineering; 2) materials physics; and 3) geophysics.

Psychology offers a strong major focusing on behavioral psychology and its application in modern social and institutional settings.

True-Twinning provides students with guaranteed admission to Western Michigan University if they meet the minimum academic standard of the university (at least CGPA 2.0).. Students are guaranteed a place in their major field. Students are counseled by the Resident Director from Western Michigan University. All subjects passed at Sunway College are accepted by the University. True-Twinning saves time & money. In Malaysia & the U.S., 3 semesters per year are offered so that most students may complete their degree in 3.5 years after SPM. This is also a transfer program to other top U.S. universities (not guaranteed). This is a proven program, with more than 1,500 students sent to the U.S. There are 3 intakes per year.
