B.S. Engineering Bachelor of Engineering + Engineering Technology Degrees The College of Engineering & Applied Sciences offers many degree programs. We recommend to Malaysian students the degrees accredited at the highest level in the U.S. (ABET). Students complete 55 - 60 cr. hrs. at Sunway College toward the 129-133 cr. hrs. required for the specific engineering degree. Two-thirds of the degree program is pursued in the United States where outstanding computer facilities, laboratories, instruction (from Ph.D. engineers), and library resources (computer indexed) offer exciting, state-of-the-art education. U.S. News & World Report rated Westerns engineering programs 19th in 1996, out of more than 300 universities offering accredited engineering degrees. Computer Engineering requires 130 cr. hrs. emphasizes computer hardware design and quality assurance while offering secondary emphasis on software issues (see Computer Science). Electrical Engineering requires 130 cr. hrs. of study with emphasis on power systems, digital and communications systems. Mechanical Engineering requires 132 cr. hrs. of study and offer career opportunities in manufacturing, machine tool design, product development; land, sea, air, and space vehicles & systems; energy conversion & distribution; environmental systems; and construction & development. (Students desiring aeronautical engineering should opt for mechanical engineering.) Industrial Engineering requires 129 cr. hrs. preparing for careers designing, installing, and improving systems that integrate people, materials, equipment, and energy. Careers focus on facilities planning & design, plant automation, quality assurance, and plant safety, etc. Manufacturing Engineering Technology requires 133 cr. hrs. for careers planning manufacturing processes and developing tooling, machines & systems for efficient production. Students specialize in cast metals technology, plastics technology, or wood products manufacture. Western Michigan University, a state supported (public, not private) university is one of North Americas top-rated young universities. 50th largest in the United States, it offers undergraduate degrees in nearly 170 areas. Of its 28,000 students about 2,000 are international students from more than 90 countries. Western Michigan University is the #1 U.S. university for Malaysian students, according to MACEE (1989-1995). Westerns link with Malaysia extends over 25 years. Many graduates exercise high-level leadership in government and business & industry. Few other U.S. universities have so many graduates in Malaysia. Our alumni network makes it easier for a student to launch a professional career upon return to Malaysia. Western Michigan University is JPA-recognized. Western Michigan University a World of Difference! True-Twinning provides students with guaranteed admission to Western Michigan University if they meet the minimum academic standard of the university (at least CGPA 2.0). Students are guaranteed a place in their major field. Students are counselled by the Resident Director from Western Michigan University. All subjects passed at Sunway College are accepted by the University. True-twinning saves time & money. In Malaysia & the U.S., 3 semesters per year are offered so that most students may complete their degree in 3.5 years after SPM. This is also a transfer program of other top U.S. universities (not guaranteed). This is a proven program, with more than 1,500 students sent to the U.S. Sunway students become top engineering students in the U.S. We have 3 intakes per year. Studies at Sunway College include foundation subjects for all engineering degrees as well as general education subjects required of all students. (U.S. universities require general education regardless of degree program; this is a key feature of U.S. higher education designed to stimulate self-reliant learning, critical thinking, & adaptability to change.) Students do not need to decide their specific engineering degree program until they transfer to the U.S. Studies to be completed at Sunway College are as follows:1. Complete 55-60 credit hours with an average mark of at least "C" (CGPA 2.0). 2. Complete with at least a "C" grade as many of the following as possible:
3. Complete a selection of the following general education subjects: Hist 120 Outline of American History` 3 Phil 200 Intro to Philosophy 4 Soc 200 Principles of Sociology 3 Soc 334 Pacific Rim Asian Soc. 3 Engl 210 Film Interpretation 4 (OR Engl 110 Literary Intrepretation) Enrollment Scenario by Semester Subjects may be taken in any order, except for prerequisite subjects and Engl 160. Students are advised regarding the best strategy. A normal student load is 13-16 credit hours of subjects each semester.
